Green-Winged Teals are the smallest dabbling ducks in North America, and they are generally found in larger numbers during fall and winter in Metro Vancouver. Though tiny compared to other ducks, they can hold their own. While the females are unremarkable except for their green speculums, the males sport a striking green eyestripe and cinnamon brown head.

One of several pairs of resident Wood Ducks who call Burnaby Lake Regional Park, home. This sprawling 3 km wildlife habitat hosts the largest concentrations of Wood Ducks found in British Columbia throughout the year, plus a lively diversity of resident migratory songbird and waterfowl species. Black bear, bobcat, painted turtles, Douglas squirrels, and beavers may also be found here.

A Beautiful Pair of Wood Ducks at the Pond Coffee Mug Set

Nothing says "you complete me" or "your better/other half" than these whimsical, wildlife-themed lovers' mugs. Diminutive Bufflehead ducks tend to be a challenge to photograph since they keep their distance, but there's always one in the flock (usually, a male) who takes his patrol duty very seriously. Catching the colours of his iridescent head is always a real treat.  When the sentry declares the coast to be clear (or confirms the availability of food), the others of his small flock (which will contain an almost even number of monochromatic females) will often come over. Buffleheads are present in the Pacific Northwest from fall through spring.

While the males are (understandably, and expectedly), brightly coloured, with green plumage and candy-corn yellow beak, the females are just as colourful, with their striking red and cobalt blue feathers.

The brighter-colored male on the left was temporarily stunned when he flew into window mesh a few days before Christmas 2014, but, after a few minutes, flew off, none the worse for wear. Photographed almost a year later, the female on the right was busy indulging in bright orange pyracantha pomes (that match her plumage!) on a rainy day in mid-November 2014.

During my second visit to Surrey's Elgin Heritage Park, my wish to see a Golden-Crowned Kinglet again was granted with the appearance of one of several accomplished singers in a giant fir tree. A diminutive but high-energy and multi-tasking bundle of energy--being able to sing, and flit from branch to branch while hunting for insects--the Golden-Crowned Kinglet nevertheless proved to be a challenging subject to capture.

This male Downy Woodpecker announced himself quite vocally with a trademark chip-chip-chip repertoire just before making an appearance on this dead tree.
