This female Anna's hummingbird adds a bit of colour and personality to the backyard on a rainy day. She is quiet and stealthy--and can often materialize without making a sound. Contrast this behaviour with that of the male, who makes himself heard well before I see him. Photographed perching on the Scarlet Trumpet vine after furtively having several long sips from the new nectar feeder--which has also drawn the attention and interest of at least one Black-Capped Chickadee, too.

One of an unexpectedly large flock of 30 Buffleheads, who were swimming in a local pond at Ambleside Park in early December 2016. These seaducks were uncharacteristically bold, and venturing as far to land as a few feet away from the water's edge. More than a handful--like this handsome adult male--looked like they were expectantly waiting handouts of birdseed from the watching birders and photographers, and yet, when none was forthcoming, resumed their activities of swimming, preening, or diving for food.

Birding just a small clearing of forest in Minnekhada Regional Park in late May 2016 yielded two new bird species for my life list, including this Red-Breasted Sapsucker, who chose to fly to a dead tree as I was photographing some other birds. This handsome woodpecker did not call -- but its bright red head did all the talking for it. It was all I could do not to stop and stare.

Third time (and third day!) was finally the charm with the reclusive Band-Tailed Pigeon, North America's largest pigeon. A small, paparazzi-shy, and unusually late-migrating flock of 8 of these purple forest pigeons has been in the neighborhood for 2 days, but this one finally consented to having its photo taken through a window on a fine spring morning as it perched on the shepherd's crook (after very quietly flying onto one of the 100-foot tall Douglas Firs in the backyard)! Birding the great outdoors in the Pacific Northwest as autumn started to turn the summer green golden brought me to this trio of horses--a grey, a chestnut, and a dark bay--who clearly found the photographer so fascinating that they momentarily stopped grazing and placed themselves by the fence posts to observe me. Autumn Portrait of Three Horses Jigsaw Puzzle

The first time I saw this small winged predator, it made its cameo in the backyard, to the dismay of the songbird regulars. Even though I (rather noisily) opened a window of the sunroom to get a shot of it, it made no move to move. Instead, it surveyed the grounds below it and the trees above, almost patiently, and methodically, before turning its bright yellow eyes on the photographer.

This stunning wildlife design features thousands of American Wigeons (and the odd Northern Pintail) sent into flight by three Bald Eagles working in concert on the wintry shores of Boundary Bay Regional Park in beautiful Tsawwassen, British Columbia, Canada.
