Our second year globe artichokes are no slouch when it comes to flaunting the "purple hair", either. Should you be one of those backyard gardeners who let their artichokes grow old and arthritic--instead of picking them at their juiciest, tastiest stage, this is the lovely result, and a consolation prize of sorts. Flowering Globe Artichoke Postcard

Who ya calling a turkey? I spotted this handsome male Ring-Necked Pheasant foraging in the oddest of places ... not a marsh or wild woodland habitat, but the green well-maintained grass of a heritage air park! He did not seem concerned that a couple of camera lenses was trained on him, but, from time to time, would stand up on his legs, flap his wings, and give his best rooster impression, before returning to the task of foraging. On a rather birdless day, seeing this gamebird made my day. Photographed on Good Friday 2017.

Surprised Ring-Necked Pheasant in Grass Postcard

Doing a flyby over the local ferry causeway at very close range on an early and blustery afternoon was this adult Ring-Billed Gull. I found this photo, which captures the downstroke, to be even more dramatic than the upstroke.

Breathtaking Ring-Billed Gull in Flight Postcard

Rufous Hummingbirds have usually left Metro Vancouver for Mexico by mid August, so it was a delight to see and photograph this exceedingly feisty straggler in the backyard. This little scrapper has been (successfully, for the past two days) giving grief to the juvenile male Anna's hummingbird who has owned the backyard for most of the summer (as well as the other feathered friends who visit), vigorously defending every flower and feeder in sight. This hybrid fruit tree branch has become its favorite perch, and gave me quite a few photographic opportunities. Photographed on September 4, 2016.

Cute Pair of Sanderlings Sandpipers Shares a Meal Postcard

One of a dozen of Harlequin Ducks I had the fortune of meeting at the beach, and my closest encounter with these diving sea ducks. Interestingly, all were adult males in near or full breeding plumage and showing off their slate grey, white, and rich cinnamon feathers, but there were no ladies of their own kind to impress. Beautiful Harlequin Duck on the Rock Postcard

The African Superb Starling is such a beautiful rainbow of colours. When it makes an entrance, it really makes an entrance; it's no shrinking violet. Rare, though, is the moment when it stays still long enough to get a photo of it, but got it I did, as it waited for its turn to bathe in the waterfall.

Cute and Spunky Lincoln's Sparrow Flask

This male Downy Woodpecker announced himself quite vocally with a trademark chip-chip-chip repertoire just before making an appearance on this dead tree. He proceeded to peck away at his perch, oblivious of the solitary camera lens trained on him and the many walkers on the trail.
