Strikingly colored winterberries have already ripened by late fall at the Boundary Bay Wildlife Management Area in Delta, British Columbia, Canada. It's not a Pacific Northwest winter unless you see the Varied Thrush. One of my favorite backyard birds to see (and a highly elusive one at that), this songbird has a stunning beauty to match the hauntingly beautiful timbre of its song. This handsome fellow was foraging in the backyard with several other wintering birds when I photographed him from the second floor--giving me a rare bird's eye view of him. We almost never see them during the summer when they spend that season northwards in Alaska, but the call of the colder seasons of the year brings them back to us. Photographed in mid-January 2017.

7 Killdeer were frequenting the mudflats near the pumphouse at Boundary Bay Regional Park / Centennial Beach after the first snowfall to truly blanket the region and turn normally flowing watercourses into frozen lakes of ice and snow. In my admittedly short 2 years of birding, I have never encountered Killdeer at this time of the year (winter is a week away), let alone under the current weather conditions. Photographed in mid-December 2016 during an unseasonably prolonged cold snap.

Rufous Hummingbirds have usually left Metro Vancouver for Mexico by mid August, so it was a delight to see and photograph this exceedingly feisty straggler in the backyard. This little scrapper has been (successfully, for the past two days) giving grief to the juvenile male Anna's hummingbird who has owned the backyard for most of the summer (as well as the other feathered friends who visit), vigorously defending every flower and feeder in sight. This hybrid fruit tree branch has become its favorite perch, and gave me quite a few photographic opportunities. Photographed on September 4, 2016.

My second visit to the Maplewood Conservation Area in North Vancouver produced meetings with not two, but six blacktail deer in a clearing ... four fawns and two does who seemed completely at ease with the small group of photographers in their midst. The younger ones seemed almost as curious about the humans as we were about them! This fawn was extremely happy to be alive, bounding in a very Bambi-esque manner through the forest! A Showstopping Ruddy Turnstone Serving Tray

This gorgeous loner, a late migrant Ruddy Turnstone, had no qualms about the myriad of lenses pointed his way on an early sunny afternoon at the south side of the Tsawwassen Ferry Jetty. From time to time, he would amaze us with his extraordinary feats of strength (this involved lifting clumps of kelp much bigger than himself, in his search for grubs and other tasty aquatic comestibles that shorebirds such as he would find irresistibly delectable -- great comic relief). Once in a while, he would pause to show us his best side (all of them). Clearly, he knew that the spotlight was on him, and he used it to his best advantage. My first encounter with this well-camouflaged shorebird, and another bird for my life list.
