Curious American Robin Songbird in the Grass Magnet

They're not juniper berries, but this bird--which is rarely seen here in the Metro Vancouver area--clearly isn't finicky when it comes to winter fruits. This Townsend's Solitaire (another bird for my life list) materialized on our front lawn pyracantha bush on December 9, 2015, but it required two more visits more a week later to finally get proof of this handsome thrush.

Actually, he's drying out his wings after a bath in the summer sun. Wood Ducks are some of the prettiest, most colourful waterfowl I've seen in Metro Vancouver. Comfortable both in the water and on land, they can also be found perched on tree branches--the only species of duck that can do so.

An overcast day is best for capturing the scintillating pink balaclava of the Anna's hummingbird, but that doesn't mean the subject will be any closer! Sitting on the old plum tree is the adult male Anna's, who was (eventually) given the ouster/bill/boot by a visiting female Rufous hummingbird a in the mid-spring of 2015. A curious and vocal Marsh Wren darts out of the marsh, long enough for me to snap his photo. Like most wrens found in Metro Vancouver, Marsh Wrens are songbirds that you tend to hear more of than you actually see. Photographed on the shores of the manmade Surrey Lake Park.

A Beautiful Marsh Wren in--Where Else?--the Marsh Magnet

Far easier to distinguish than Tundra Swans and Trumpeter Swans by virtue of its facial knob and bright orange bill, a Mute Swan shows off its elegant plumage as it leisurely plies the waters of Lost Lagoon at Stanley Park.

If the legendary celestial phoenix had an earthly form, it would have to be this creature. Golden Pheasants are showstoppers, wherever you see them. In their natural environment, these shy creatures seek the underbrush in the day and roost high in trees at night. As with most birds in the avian kingdom, the males are the ones who dress to impress, and this uncharacteristically bold fellow is no exception. This is the red gold variant.

Marigolds aren't just eye candy; they've been used for culinary (teas, salads) and medicinal (anti-inflammatory) purposes for hundreds of years in European cultures. These beautiful, aromatic and showy blooms bloom all summer long into fall and even until the first frost. They are a natural mosquito repellent, and may also keep flower munchers like deer from the pride and joy in your garden. An almost perfectly camouflaged female Great Horned Owl attempts to catch some shuteye in the neighbor's 100-foot Douglas Fir on a rainy fall day, only to be subjected to the verbal and physical harangues of nine Northwestern Crows. Great Horned Owl in the Douglas Fir Wall Sticker

Despite the absence of bright, vivid feathers, Bushtits are such colorful characters. Although virtually identical in coloration and size, the light-eyed females are easily distinguishable from the dark-eyed males. These small but sprightly songbirds flock to seed-bearing trees and bushes as well as backyard suet feeders. This guy was calling attention to himself at Boundary Bay's Centennial Beach on an otherwise uneventful day of birding.

The lone representative of its species (a recently recognized and separate species of the black geese family), a Cackling Goose (once considered a Canada Goose subspecies), plies the waters of an inner pond at Jericho Park on a sunny and surprisingly warm-for-winter afternoon.
