On a very memorable Boxing Day 2017, these diminutive Green-Winged Teals were waddling daintily on the frozen ice with many others of their kind on the marshes lining Burnaby Lake's Piper Spit--proving to be very co-operative with the photographers. The same could not be said for the more standoffish Buffleheads, who were many yards from sight.

An adult White-Crowned Sparrow cuts a dashing figure at Boundary Bay Regional Park in South Delta, British Columbia, Canada, on the first day of the Great Backyard Bird Count 2018.

This was a Christmas Day filled with plenty of birds in the backyard -- including this rather introspective Black-Capped Chickadee looking skyward on the pear tree. Sunny skies and chilly temps made my puffed up and sleepy feathered friends reluctant to stir from their perches, and that led to a few opportunities for closeups of birds I normally find difficult to get stills of. This male Pekin Robin decided to satisfy his curiosity of the approaching humans, and flew into a large tropical tree to observe us from under the large leafy cover. Our initial encounter was all too brief and disappointing, but this second meeting yielded the opportunity to study this wonderfully dressed and beautiful singer in much greater detail and length. Our subject must have noticed this, as he was unusually still and not hopping from branch to branch!

An Indian subcontinent native, this Old World babbler is so popular that many other countries want to claim it for their own, and so, it goes by other aliases, including Pekin Robin, Pekin nightingale, Japanese hill robin, and Japanese nightingale.

The first full day of snow in Metro Vancouver, British Columbia, Canada, saw many fluffed up songbirds in the backyard perched on the fruit trees for most of the day, including at least two Cassiar Dark-Eyed Juncos (an intergrade of Slate-Colored and Oregon varieties), like this chubby little number here. As Buffleheads don't congregate in large flocks (4 is generally the maximum) but do keep their distance from humans and potential predators (with the exception of the odd sentry, who investigates all comings and goings of creatures other than itself), it was a pleasant surprise to see both conventions broken in early December 2016, when we spotted a flock of 30 at one of the local ponds, swimming very close to the edge of the pond -- and even anticipating handouts of birdseed! Clearly, these seaducks have become accustomized to the presence of creatures like us!

If the legendary celestial phoenix had an earthly form, it would have to be this creature. Golden Pheasants are showstoppers, wherever you see them. In their natural environment, these shy creatures seek the underbrush in the day and roost high in trees at night. As with most birds in the avian kingdom, the males are the ones who dress to impress, and this uncharacteristically bold fellow is no exception. This is the red gold variant.

Visiting during the much lower afternoon tide enabled us to see a total of sixteen Black Oystercatchers working the south side of the Tsawwassen Ferry Causeway for clams--the highest number we have seen at this location. With their long, bright red bills and yellow eyes, these resident shorebirds are easily identifiable, even from a distance. Photographed on October 19, 2016.

Black Oystercatcher at the Beach Ceramic Tile

Feline good! This l'il shadowboxer looks like s/he means business, but that stern expression belies a very friendly nature. It takes a very trusting feline to walk right up to a complete stranger, lie on the ground, and roll around several times (showing belly) in the parking lot at the Ladner Harbour Park (where it looks like a film shoot or a local festival is being set up) as if she's known you all her life. She certainly knows how to play up to the camera -- those yellow eyes never leave it (maybe she's a studio cat)! Oh, and she came by to rub my legs after she finished with her sandbath. Judging by the condition of the immaculate fur and the dainty pink collar with bells, this is clearly someone's well fed and (very) well cared for bicolour orange spotted tabby.

Cute Funny Shadowboxing Orange Cat in the Gravel Mouse Pad

Heavenly Pink and Baby Blue Hydrangeas Hanging Lamp

Metro Vancouver's second snowstorm of the winter season finally brought the lovely and much anticipated male Varied Thrush to my backyard, where he spent the greater part of the day excavating the white stuff for tasty grubs. With their dazzling palette of orange, grey, and black hues, this reclusive songbird is a welcome sight during the monochromatic winter months. Photographed in mid-February 2019.
