At extremely low tide in mid-May 2016 (the water's edge was some 350-400m from its usual position), shorebirds were far and few between, except for this pair of Least Sandpipers, the smallest sandpipers in North America. These sparrow-sized peeps are easier to distinguish from the other peeps like Western Sandpipers and Semipalmated Sandpipers by virtue of their yellow-green legs (when those limbs aren't covered in mud, of course). This pair was so well camouflaged that I saw only one on my walk out from the Beach Grove Lagoon. After careful searching, I discovered both on my return trip.

Cute Least Sandpiper Shorebird at Low Tide Keychain

This male Tree Swallow appears to be quite taken with this particular nestbox ... that look says "mine, all mine." Photographed in late March 2016. 

These small bluebirds have shown up almost a month later than last year, and the initial flocks are much smaller, too. 

Also absent at this time are the greyer females, which at the same time last year were already here. Nevertheless, it's still a wonderful experience to see these little birds in action over the water and in the skies.

Stunning Tree Swallow Songbird in Nestbox Keychain

The first time I saw this small winged predator, it made its cameo in the backyard, to the dismay of the songbird regulars. Even though I (rather noisily) opened a window of the sunroom to get a shot of it, it made no move to move. Instead, it surveyed the grounds below it and the trees above, almost patiently, and methodically, before turning its bright yellow eyes on the photographer.

It's always a wonderful moment when our subjects seek us out instead of the other way around! A particularly bold American Robin approaches our picnic table to stare at us -- perhaps he was hoping that we had worms or berries with us?

A Curious American Robin Keychain

There were plenty of babies at Burnaby Lake ... and all were Canada Goose goslings. One family unit had a staggering 35 new additions! The parents of this particular gosling swam with their brood right under our noses along the boardwalk!

Tiny Cute Canada Goose Gosling Swimming Keychain

Blue Jays may be one of North America's most iconic bird species, but they are rarely found on the West Coast. However, this one has discovered that Ladner Harbor Park in beautiful British Columbia is a great place to hang out and avoid the nasty snowfalls of the east. S/he's been "resident" in this forest since early November 2020 and grants an audience to whomever is willing to shell out a handout of peanuts first. Photographed in late March 2021.

Cute Blue Jay Songbird on Treestump Keychain

This was a Christmas Day filled with plenty of birds in the backyard -- including this rather introspective Black-Capped Chickadee looking skyward on the pear tree. Sunny skies and chilly temps made my puffed up and sleepy feathered friends reluctant to stir from their perches, and that led to a few opportunities for closeups of birds I normally find difficult to get stills of.

A Black-Capped Chickadee on the Pear Tree Keychain

With flaming red mascara to match his lipstick and magnificent crest, this handsome Crested Wood Partridge looks just as flamboyant as he sounds. Our first encounter with the Roul Roul proved to be elusive and disappointing. This latest visit, however, yielded multiple encounters with five of them, including two pairs, and a full-grown offspring. None of these diminutive pheasants showed the least bit of hesitance about stepping out--which made us very careful where we walked!

This young Bald Eagle came to within 20 feet of me as it flew over my head during my walk through the Boundary Bay Regional Park, a sprawling wildlife habitat in Metro Vancouver, British Columbia, Canada, on an early spring day in 2017. We locked eyes briefly (neither really daunted by the presence of the other), and then it continued to wing its way to a copse of dead birch trees where several others of its kind were roosting.
