A presumed hobby farm escapee, this adult male Mandarin Duck has been seen in the company of the Wood Ducks of Piper Spit. He has called Burnaby Lake home since he was first spotted in 2018. His stunning pastiche of ruffs, dazzling color palette, and "fins" make him such a dreamboat to photograph. Mother Nature left nothing to the artist's imagination when she made this creature! Beautiful Chatty Mandarin Duck at the Pond Postcard

With the deep blue of the water in the background, I could not have asked for better light or a better pose with this shot (I did hope to be a little closer to my subject, though!) Three of these very active and adorable buntings were hopping up and down the shoreline at the Tsawwassen Ferry Jetty on a sunny but very breezy evening! Lapland Longspurs are delightful little songbirds that winter in Metro Vancouver but spend their summers in the high Arctic. Photographed on October 17, 2016.

It’s not every day that you see big blue fir cones in Vancouver. The abies koreana is an endangered fir found in the mountains of South Korea. This is one of (at least) two such trees planted on the grounds of the UBC Botanical Garden.

There's lots to be admired when you're a Hooded Merganser. Crests are your specialty, whether you're the male or the female. The ladies have lovely cinnamon crests, and the gentlemen inflatable black-and-white numbers complemented by a one-size-fits-all black tux for all seasons with a swath of reddish brown on their sides.

Her cobalt blue mascara never runs! Quiet as her mate is noisy, this female Eclectus Parrot surprised me even further by choosing to perch uncharacteristically close to my lens.

Despite the many pots of butterfly bushes we have growing in the backyard, butterflies like this Western Tiger Swallowtail butterfly who stop to drink their nectar are still a rare occurrence (we even have a butterfly motel!) This is an angled top-down shot of one. The visiting Rufous hummingbirds have also given these bushes a number of pokes.

An "urban" Rough-Legged Hawk perches precariously on the top of a spindly young tree in Tsawwassen, British Columbia, Canada. As I have seen this raptor several times near the local shopping mall, I can only assume that this is its territory--before and after development. The first time I have seen the reclusive Hermit Thrush perfectly posed on the pyracantha coccinea (Scarlet Firethorn) in the front yard. The warm yellow you see in the backyard is the leaves of the neighbor's weeping alder (just a few days after this photograph was taken, those leaves all fell off).
