Blue Jays may be one of North America's most iconic bird species, but they are rarely found on the West Coast. However, this one has discovered that Ladner Harbor Park in beautiful British Columbia is a great place to hang out and avoid the nasty snowfalls of the east. S/he's been "resident" in this forest since early November 2020 and grants an audience to whomever is willing to shell out a handout of peanuts first. Photographed in late March 2021.

My second encounter with a male Mountain Bluebird. We are gifted, albeit very briefly, with the presence of these beautiful songbirds at the start of the spring season before they head to higher ground to breed. Those stunning cerulean colors stand out on a dreary landscape, even from a distance. When he wasn't busy diving for insects on the local beach, he was highpointing it on driftwood and stalks of dessicated tansy. Photographed at Boundary Bay Regional Park in early spring 2017.

An overcast day is best for capturing the scintillating pink balaclava of the Anna's hummingbird, but that doesn't mean the subject will be any closer! This is the adult male who was given the ouster/bill/boot by a visiting female Rufous hummingbird a few weeks ago. He has since returned, and she is now the visitor. He's sitting on the old plum tree and giving the photographer the eyeball.

My second visit to the Maplewood Conservation Area in North Vancouver produced meetings with not two, but six blacktail deer in a clearing ... four fawns and two does who seemed completely at ease with the small group of photographers in their midst. The younger ones seemed almost as curious about the humans as we were about them! This fawn was extremely happy to be alive, bounding in a very Bambi-esque manner through the forest! The fly I just caught was THAT big! This handsome male Rufous Hummingbird was photographed at one of the nectar feeders at the Reifel Migratory Bird Sanctuary in mid-May 2016. These feisty little hummingbirds are a popular attraction in Metro Vancouver, and can be seen here patronizing nectar feeders from March through August, although warm spells late into the fall in 2015 saw a few overstaying their welcome until the end of October!

With the deep blue of the water in the background, I could not have asked for better light or a better pose with this shot (I did hope to be a little closer to my subject, though!) Three of these very active and adorable buntings were hopping up and down the shoreline at the Tsawwassen Ferry Jetty on a sunny but very breezy evening! Lapland Longspurs are delightful little songbirds that winter in Metro Vancouver but spend their summers in the high Arctic. Photographed on October 17, 2016.
