Celebrate nature with these sticky notes, which feature the profile of perhaps the most cosmopolitan of swallows.

By mid-May 2016, the Reifel Migratory Bird Sanctuary on Westham Island had already hosted 10 fledged Barn Swallows! I can usually find at least a couple of them who like to hang around the Warming Hut, as curious about the photographers behind the long lenses as we are about them. Always a pleasure to make the acquaintance of these colourful aerialists!

A number of these large butterflies were flying through the Boundary Bay Wildlife Management Area during our early evening visit, but this one was "kind" enough to grant us an impromptu studio session for a few minutes while it fluttered and fed from the local flora.

Sanderlings are tiny -- and surprisingly, quite approachable -- migratory shorebirds that can be easily found on Vancouver beaches in the coldest winter months. This one was foraging on the shoreline with 100 of its kind and a few Dunlins. Photographed on a sunny autumn afternoon at Boundary Bay Regional Park.

The biggest eagle in North America is an extremely common sight in Metro Vancouver; I can see 100 or more in any given day. Their nests--also the largest of any bird in North America--are amazing to see, with or without any inhabitants in them; I have seen many built in tall trees and even some on the tops of transmission towers.

An adult Bald Eagle flies into the sunset at the Wireless 40 Station in Ladner, British Columbia. We saw 40-50 Bald Eagles (a conservative estimate) of various ages in this area in late December 2016--most were roosting high in the tops of trees scattered through this dog park.

I witnessed a beautiful moment of friendship between these two gorgeous chestnut horses. Were they mother and child; siblings; or simply stablemates? It didn't matter what their relationship to each other was. The importance was the now of the moment. Not even a nicker did I hear pass between them; the simple act of touching spoke volumes for both.

Meditations on a squash! This Pacific Tree Frog was seeking a few moments of serenity on a ripening squash. My subject blended in with the green colors of its environment, eluding all but the most keen observers. When we had returned from a circuit of the gardens, s/he was still sitting there. Two handsome adult Black-Headed Grosbeaks have been haunting the bird feeders in the backyard this week! This 2-year-old male was perched briefly on the pieris japonica until a couple of naughty and pushy American Robins booted him from it. Luckily, the oustee came back an hour later to partake of more of the free seeds. Photographed in late May 2020.
