My second (and closest) encounter with the magnificent cheetah on a hot afternoon in September 2014 at the local zoo. This big cat was pacing restlessly around in his cage, but he did stop once, and our eyes locked through the chain link during this moments. There is something so visceral about making a connection with wildlife.

Trading Glances with a Magnificent Cheetah Ceramic Tile

Who ya calling a turkey? I spotted this handsome male Ring-Necked Pheasant foraging in the oddest of places ... not a marsh or wild woodland habitat, but the green well-maintained grass of a heritage air park! He did not seem concerned that a couple of camera lenses was trained on him, but, from time to time, would stand up on his legs, flap his wings, and give his best rooster impression, before returning to the task of foraging. On a rather birdless day, seeing this gamebird made my day. Photographed on Good Friday 2017.

Profile of a Ring-Necked Pheasant Ceramic Tile

An unusual bird to see in Metro Vancouver during the fall migratory bird season, this Buff-Breasted Sandpiper was one of two I had the opportunity to photograph up close, and one of five spotted here in 2016. Like the Sanderling, the BBSA is exceedingly comfortable around humans. 

The BBSA is special for another reason: fewer than 80,000 individuals are estimated worldwide (per data from migration sites and its allaboutbirds.org/guide/Buff-breasted_Sandpiper/id profile; actual figures are difficult to obtain, as it does not always exhibit nest fidelity), making it a Near Threatened species. Its dainty, dove-like head, short bill, and buff coloration make it one of the easier peeps to identify. It is a transcontinental bird, flying northwards to breed in the arctic, and wintering in South America.

Rather comically, this one spent some time chasing the other one off. Apparently, it wanted the attention of the photographers all to itself! When it wasn't hogging the limelight, it made sure every lens was trained on it -- regardless of what it was doing -- foraging, resting on the grass, or grooming its feathers. In mid-August 2016, I met my first Wilson's Phalaropes. This was one of two juveniles, wandering the ponds at the George C. Reifel Migratory Bird Sanctuary in Ladner, British Columbia. Much smaller than Yellowlegs, these small but elegant shorebirds are typically seen at this time of the year, although never in large flocks. Breeding females are typically larger and more boldly colored than their male counterparts -- one of the few exceptions in the avian kingdom, where the males outshine the females in style and size.

When you're this small and round, even watching you eat is a cute experience! Saw more of the tiny Sanderlings at the Boundary Bay Regional Park beach, just before Valentine's Day 2017. This one was foraging on the shoreline with 20 others of its kind, dining on the remnants of clams that had been already picked apart by gulls.

Cute Sanderling Sandpiper Shorebird Dines on Clam Watch

Eastern Kingbirds are welcome and familiar sighted during Metro Vancouver summers. Smartly dressed in black and white and sporting a patrician (some might say, an imperious) air about themselves, I can usually find these feathered insectivores roosting on their favorite trees and bushes close to the walking trails at Coquitlam's Colony Farm Regional Park. My subject here took the cake for boldness, hopping from branch to branch and edging closer and closer to my lens. I could not have asked for a better subject!

An adult Bald Eagle flies into the sunset at the Wireless 40 Station in Ladner, British Columbia. We saw 40-50 Bald Eagles (a conservative estimate) of various ages in this area in late December 2016--most were roosting high in the tops of trees scattered through this dog park.

One of several bumblebees on the flowering carrot in our backyard. We don't usually get as many of these fuzzy insects as we do the honeybees, but the former can be quite large (defying the laws of physics and aviation at times) and generally much easier to photograph than the latter.

WWN Bumblebee on Flowering Carrot

Part brainteaser, part assemble-it-yourself art, this challenging, wildlife-themed puzzle is great for improving muscle memory. 

They're not juniper berries, but this bird--which is rarely seen here in the Metro Vancouver area--clearly isn't finicky when it comes to winter fruits. This Townsend's Solitaire (another bird for my life list) materialized on our front lawn pyracantha bush on December 9, 2015, but it required two more visits more a week later to finally get proof of this handsome thrush.

Add a touch of nature to the kitchen or dining room with this striking, wildlife-themed glass coaster, which features my first encounter with an American Avocet at Boundary Bay Regional Park in beautiful Tsawwassen, British Columbia. This elegant wading bird is rarely found in Canada's westernmost province, so to discover two adults spending a week there during the early stages of fall migration, enjoying the local amenities and completely at ease with the photographer in their midst, was a real treat. Stunning American Avocet Wading Bird at the Beach Glass Coaster

The start of the growing season means the return of the diminutive but feisty Rufous Hummingbirds to Metro Vancouver. From March through August, their presence means increased competition for nectar feeders and flowers for the resident Anna's hummingbirds. This fellow was one of five Rufouses to visit the Richmond Nature Park regularly on an early spring day. We witnessed extremely vocal and physical territorial disputes (which were, rather comically, inversely proportional to the size of the combatants). Photographed on April 4, 2016.
