One of several Black-Capped Chickadees patronizing the backyard feeders. I managed to catch this little one perched on the pear tree and catching a bit of afternoon sun, with the blush of autumn behind it (courtesy of the neighbor's giant red maple tree). Photographed in late October 2017.

A presumed hobby farm escapee, this adult male Mandarin Duck has been seen in the company of the Wood Ducks of Piper Spit. He has called Burnaby Lake home since he was first spotted in 2018. His stunning pastiche of ruffs, dazzling color palette, and "fins" make him such a dreamboat to photograph. Mother Nature left nothing to the artist's imagination when she made this creature! Beautiful Mandarin Duck in the Pond Bath Mat

Add a touch of nature to the bathroom with this wildlife-themed bath mat! 

The first full day of snow in Metro Vancouver, British Columbia, Canada, saw many fluffed up songbirds in the backyard perched on the fruit trees for most of the day, including at least two Cassiar Dark-Eyed Juncos (an intergrade of Slate-Colored and Oregon varieties), like this chubby little number here. Slate-Colored Dark-Eyed Junco on the Pear Tree Bath Mat

Add a touch of nature to the bathroom with this floral-themed bath mat!  These Satin Flowers (also known by their more plebian alias, Pale Yellow-Eyed Grass) grow in a round and blossom in tiers; there are two tiers of flowers above and one tier of flowers below this one.

After more than 2 years of trying to impress a large coterie of female Wood Ducks at Piper Spit, this adult male Mandarin Duck, a presumed escapee from a hobby farm, has finally picked up a girlfriend. He has been extremely attentive to and around her, even keeping would-be suitors at bay. Photographed in early March 2020.

I couldn't find an angle I liked with vivid this two-tone Monsella tulip until I did a few macro shots of it, and the seeming randomness of the streaks of red running rampant through this bright yellow flower seemed to me like a chaotically natural expression of art.

One of seven Black Oystercatchers we spotted on a chilly but sunny day at the Tsawwassen Ferry Jetty over the Great Backyard Bird Count 2018 (Feb 16-19) weekend. Black Oystercatcher at the Beach Trinket Tray

Add a touch of nature to any room with this wildlife-themed wall hanging. 

Although this fierce-looking falcon looks very much like a Peregrine, it's actually a Gyr-Saker hybrid falcon. Falconers crossbreed both in captivity with the hopes of producing a hybrid with the best traits of both species: in this case, the stamina of the large Gyrfalcon with the speed of the Saker falcon.

They're back! On a surprisingly cold and rainy morning, two flocks of Bushtits (10 in each) flew in for brunch on the flowering carrot, butterfly bush, and California Lilac bush. Some took baths on the wet leaves, and these five guys were huddled on the plum tree for warmth. It was tricky trying to get the catchlight in everyone's eyes (and all of them facing the camera (more or less))--but without a doubt, these little birds are naturally and undeniably photogenic. Photographed in early July 2016 and featured on the Cornell Lab of Ornithology's allaboutbirds.org website.

Saucy Red Squirrel in the Fir Notebook

Part brainteaser, part assemble-it-yourself art, this challenging, wildlife-themed puzzle is great for improving muscle memory. 

I missed seeing one of these tiny plovers in the summer, but my subject, in its non-breeding plumage, is no less beautiful for it! A rare sight for this time of the year (usually these dainty-looking shorebirds are already wintering along the coasts of the Southwestern U.S., Central America, and South America), this Semipalmated Plover was frequenting the shores of Boundary Bay at Centennial Beach during high tide, in (almost) mid-December, along with a flock of Dunlins and Sanderlings on a surprisingly sunny (and warm-for-almost-winter) day.

Black Oystercatchers are one of the most approachable shorebirds in Metro Vancouver. Some will even walk right up to you--giving you the chance for lovely photo opportunities. I like this shot because there's a blue background (water) and grey (log) to set off that striking red bill, yellow eye, pink legs, and black and brown plumage.
