Green palm leaves unintentionally vignette an adult male Golden Pheasant, simultaneously lending a subtle artistry to my capture, while doing little to disguise his stunning gold and red plumage. If the phoenix had a mortal incarnation, this surely must be it.

Emerging from the Green: Golden Pheasant Metal Ornament

2017 seems to be the year of Wilson's Warblers, and our backyard has not been exempt from the presence of these small but cheery yellow warblers. The energetic black-capped males have been exploring every potted plant and fruit tree and singing their uplifting melodies. This handsome guy paused on the cherry tree just long enough for me to get him in all his golden goodness. Photographed in mid-May 2017.

Trying its best to look adorable, this Eastern Grey Squirrel adopted a wishful pose for my camera in the hopes that I had food on my person. Some of my fellow humans succumbed to the collective charms of these non-natives, who were as thick as thieves at Stanley Park's Lost Lagoon on a chilly late November 2015 afternoon.

A mid-summer walk around Stanley Park's Lost Lagoon yielded the surprise of a raccoon. In fact, this one quietly preceded us, like a tour guide, for a hundred yards, to the cement bridge before joining a haze of other raccoons. S/he even stopped to give me a few angles ... all of which is very unnatural behaviour for a mammal who is more likely to be active at night!

Cheeky Pair of Zebra Finch Songbirds Metal Ornament

This is my second visit to Surrey's Elgin Heritage Park, and I really wished to see a Golden-Crowned Kinglet again, my first photos of it on a deciduous tree being nothing but blurs. My wish was granted with one of several accomplished singers in a giant fir tree, a high-energy, multi-tasking (being able to sing, and flit from branch to branch while hunting for insects) Golden-Crowned Kinglet, who nevertheless proved to be a challenging subject to capture.

Cute Kinglet Songbird Causes a Stir in the Fir Metal Ornament

Add a touch of nature to any room with this wildlife-themed wall hanging.  

A young sub-adult male Anna's hummingbird was taking five in the scarlet firethorn next to its pommes on an unseasonably prolonged cold snap. Unlike most other birds who frequent this bush in the fall and winter, he didn't seem to mind that I wrestled the window open (however softly I did it), and took a few shots of him next to the bunch of berries that's almost as big as he is. One of three Short-Eared Owls we saw hunting at Boundary Bay Wildlife Management Area on a winter afternoon. Not the first time I've seen a Shortie, but it is the closest I have come to photographing one. Ironically, it did fly within 15 feet of my camera, but my long lens had problems focusing on it at such close range!

Festive Red White Floral Poinsettias Large Christmas Stocking

The start of the growing season means the return of the diminutive but feisty Rufous Hummingbirds to Metro Vancouver. From March through August, their presence means increased competition for nectar feeders and flowers for the resident Anna's hummingbirds. This fellow was one of five Rufouses to visit the Richmond Nature Park regularly on an early spring day. We witnessed extremely vocal and physical territorial disputes (which were, rather comically, inversely proportional to the size of the combatants). Photographed on April 4, 2016.

The second time I've seen Dunlins since first spotting a small flock huddled together in their breeding plumage (with their trademark black belly patches on a cold spring day on the Iona Jetty in 2010). Indulging in a spot of feeding on the shoreline were three were part of a larger group of 10-12, who were fraternizing with a larger flock of Sanderlings (60) and a single out-of-season Semipalmated Plover (not pictured here).

These elegant wading birds are rarely found in Canada's westernmost province, so to discover two adults spending a week there during the early stages of fall migration, enjoying the local amenities and completely at ease with the photographer in their midst, was a real treat.
