Add a touch of nature to the kitchen with this wildlife-themed kitchen towel! Sanderlings are tiny -- and surprisingly, quite approachable -- migratory shorebirds that can be easily found on Vancouver beaches in the coldest winter months. This one was strolling quite leisurely on the shoreline. Photographed on a very sunny and busy winter afternoon at Boundary Bay Regional Park.

The first time I've had the opportunity to shoot a Bewick's Wren out in the open, and at fairly close range. This beautiful long-tailed songbird must have sensed that I wanted to photograph it, and returned my curiosity with its own by posing on this branch for a few moments. Photographed in January 2017.

A Curious Bewick's Wren in the Tree Kitchen Towel

It's hard not to be amazed by such beauty! I am so used to seeing Dunlins in flocks of hundreds and thousands in their non-breeding/winter plumage, that to encounter a solitary member of this sandpiper species is a bit puzzling. S/he was in full breeding regalia, and in no particular hurry to fly north for the summer. 

We almost missed seeing this peep--so intent on photographing the 20 Greater Scaups much further out from shore--that it was many moments before I realized that this Dunlin was quite calmly "pacing" us some 6-8 feet away on the shoreline!

Being in such close proximity to this beauty enabled me to get a good look at that black belly patch and the wonderful russet brown feathers on its head and back!

A Beautiful Dunlin Goes Solo Kitchen Towel

Colorful Tomato & Purple Bell Pepper Medley Kitchen Towel

Add a touch of nature to the kitchen with this wildlife-themed kitchen towel! The lone representative of its species (a recently recognized and separate species of the black geese family), a Cackling Goose (once considered a Canada Goose subspecies), plies the waters of an inner pond at Jericho Park on a sunny and surprisingly warm-for-winter afternoon. A much shorter bill and smaller body size set this goose apart from its larger Canada Goose cousin.

Seafood dining at its best! One of five Black Oystercatchers we spotted on a windy, cloudy day at the Tsawwassen Ferry Jetty over the Great Backyard Bird Count 2017 (Feb 17-20) weekend. The fishing (clamming?) was good ... these shorebirds were hauling in clam after clam after clam!

Black Oystercatcher Shorebird Fishing at the Beach Towel

Even on a hazy day, you can see forever. A million-dollar view of some of the Southern Gulf Islands from the top of Mount Galiano. The dragonflies were as thick as thieves at the highest point of Galiano Island, and 2-3 Turkey Vultures coasted 30-40 feet above our heads. We even witnessed a small (trio) of orca whales passing by. Not a bad reward for a relatively easy hike! Photographed in early July 2017.

Southern Gulf Islands as seen from Mount Galiano Poster

With water beading off his inflatable crest, and a simultaneously striking and conservative palette of blacks, whites, and cinnamon brown, the adult male Hooded Merganser is one winter duck species that makes you stop and stare. They will swallow large fresh pond fish whole by stretching that normally hidden neck of theirs to a foot in length. This handsome, unperturbable gent was swimming in the ponds at the local wildlife sanctuary--not surprised to see so many humans moving in a like direction--in late December 2019.

I've only met the Blue-Winged Teals this year, and each encounter has brought me progressively closer to these summering migrants! Like Gadwall drakes, Blue-Winged Teal drakes dress conservatively for their women. No flashy feathers are necessary -- just plenty of personality!

In direct competition with the Cedar Waxwings and lesser-seen Bohemian Waxwings for fruit during the cold times of the season are the familiar American Robins. Perhaps, as a result of the Polar Vortex which has been holding Metro Vancouver in its icy thrall for the past month, I have never before seen so many of these large thrushes in the area during this winter. Photographed in mid-January 2017 at the local wildlife refuge.

An American Robin Looks Up Classic Round Sticker

Diminutive Bufflehead ducks tend to be a challenge to photograph since they keep their distance, but there's always one in the flock who takes his patrol duty very seriously -- giving me a quick onceover as he swims by. There was just enough filtered sunlight on this inaugural spring afternoon to make the colours of his iridescent head visible.
