Add a touch of nature to the kitchen or dining room with this wildlife-themed serving tray! The perfect choice for bird lovers! A few minutes after leaving Westham Island, we came across this Ring-Necked Pheasant by the outside of the fence of an old farm, somewhere near Brunswick Point. I had never seen one before, either in a zoo or in the "wilds of Ladner." He did spot me trying to sneak in a photo, and hunkered down under the fence and tiptoed in the ankle-high grass. After a few moments--figuring I was gone, since I hadn't moved--he popped right back up, and that's how I got this photo.

They're not juniper berries, but this bird--which is rarely seen here in the Metro Vancouver area--clearly isn't finicky when it comes to winter fruits. This Townsend's Solitaire (another bird for my life list) materialized on our front lawn pyracantha bush on December 9, 2015, but it required two more visits more a week later to finally get proof of this handsome thrush.

Perfect for bird lovers. This beautiful young Peregrine Falcon -- who is being rehabilitated for eventual release -- was unintentionally vignetted when I photographed it through a hole in the fence. However, my subject knew to give me its best side!

Spunky songbird? Check. Puffball with a peaked coif? Check. Capable of balancing a seed on the tip of its tongue? Check. Many photo ops with a bold and beautiful Lincoln's Sparrow. One always makes sure to visit the backyard in the winter and mid-spring. Photographed in late February 2018, after a few days of heavy snowfall that deposited 6-7 inches in Metro Vancouver.

On a very memorable Boxing Day 2017, these diminutive Green-Winged Teals were waddling daintily on the frozen ice with many others of their kind on the marshes lining Burnaby Lake's Piper Spit--proving to be very co-operative with the photographers. The same could not be said for the more standoffish Buffleheads, who were many yards from sight.

A young Anna's hummingbird taking five in the scarlet firethorn next to its pommes on an unseasonably prolonged cold snap. Unlike most other birds who frequent this bush in the fall and winter, he didn't seem to mind that I wrestled the window open (however softly I did it), and took a few shots of him next to the bunch of berries that's almost as big as he is. Photographed in mid-December 2016.

It's hard not to be amazed by such beauty! I am so used to seeing Dunlins in flocks of hundreds and thousands in their non-breeding/winter plumage, that to encounter a solitary member of this sandpiper species is a bit puzzling. S/he was in full breeding regalia, and in no particular hurry to fly north for the summer.

They seem like brittle beauties, but these purple star-like flowers are surprisingly hardy, drought-resistance perennials, especially given their South African roots. Purple ice plants bloom throughout summer and make for colorful groundcover.

If you've been blessed with triplets, then this whimsical and heartwarming baby shower invitation postcard is for you! 

In a cute moment highly reminiscent of another bushtit family gathering from 2016, three young songbird fledglings roost together in the sun-dappled shade of the pear tree, while parents and helpers (older siblings) pick grubs from the leaves nearby, while keeping up a steady stream of conversation. My young subjects were only too willing to oblige for my lens. Photographed in late May 2020.

As with many yellow summer birds on my watch list, I have been pursuing this beautiful warbler and prolific singer for quite some time. Two years ago, I heard his trademark witchety-witchety-witchety birdsong and have since gotten few and frequently shaded glimpses of his rakish black mask and bright yellow breast through local shrubs and bushes. This is the closest I have come to photographing him out in the open.
