The label of lovebirds is particularly fitting for rock pigeons; they mate for life, and mourn the passing of their mates much as most humans would. Rock pigeons--like this pair--were engaging in courtship rituals or being overly affectionate with each other in Stanley Park's Lost Lagoon. These morphs were not rare; in fact, we saw quite a few pairs sporting these colour combinations. Even odder still, the white/partially leucistic ones were males, and the brown morphs females! Apparently, gentlemen prefer redheads here!

On a very memorable Boxing Day 2017, a dozen of these enchanting but highly reclusive songbirds were frequenting the trees and vocalizing near the Burnaby Lake Nature House at Piper Spit. Many were indulging in the generous winter feast of millet and sunflower seeds put out by some well-meaning birders. None seemed particularly concerned about the presence of photographers, and I daresay some of the subjects even worked the cameras with their pretty poses!

This neighbourhood cat has been very neighbourly since summer 2014 ... visiting regularly for her dose of birdwatching, cuddles, and saucer of milk. Here she is, posing next to the camellia leaves on a wet and gloomy day.  "Sweetie" is one affectionate kitty ... she has been known to leap up onto complete strangers' laps for a nap!

Our resident adult male Anna's hummingbird has never let me photograph him at close range, but on one evening in late May 2016, he came to sit on one of the old plum tree branches, just a few feet away from me. 

Perhaps, after seeing how comfortable the four visiting Rufous hummingbirds were around me, he probably figured that there wasn't anything scary about me -- and that I might even afford him some protection from the little hellraisers. So rather than being on the receiving end of his metallic scratchy or tick-tick-tick calls, he stared for a few moments into my lens, and then went to feed from the nectar feeder before making a much less frenzied exit than was his usual style.

Stunning Male Anna's Hummingbird on the Plum Tree Serving Tray

Burnaby Lake is home to the largest concentrations of Wood Ducks–hands down, the most colorful waterfowl you’ll find in Metro Vancouver, Canada.
