A Curious American Robin in the Grass Keychain

The only male Anna's hummingbird (of four males and one female regular) who would "consent" to having his (developing) crown taken at (somewhat) close range -- close, in this case, being 10-12 feet away in the second floor sunroom.  He constantly flashed me his pink head while he sat on the blackberry branch. Not even my opening a window "incentivized" him to fly off. Apparently this is fast becoming one of his favourite perches.

Anna's Hummingbird and His Raspberry-Dipped Head Keychain

Seeing a Downy Woodpecker (usually the female) on the backyard suet feeder isn't unusual. Seeing this male (busy whittling wood here) and his female (unseen, but preening herself nearby) on the pear tree just when we got a spot of sunshine over the Great Backyard Bird Count 2017 (Feb 17-20) weekend, was!

Cute Downy Woodpecker on Fruit Tree Keychain

Meditations on a squash! This Pacific Tree Frog was seeking a few moments of serenity on a ripening squash. My subject blended in with the green colors of its environment, eluding all but the most keen observers. When we had returned from a circuit of the gardens, s/he was still sitting there. Photographed in late August 2016 at the UBC Botanical Garden.

Cute Pacific Tree Frog on Summer Squash Keychain

The smallest shorebirds (and sandpipers) to visit North American shores during the summer, Least Sandpipers can be seen feeding in small flocks on the mudflats of local wildlife areas. The yellowish green legs (when not covered in mud) of these sparrow-sized "peeps" make it easy to ID them and separate them from their similarly-sized cousins, the Western Sandpipers and Semipalmated Sandpipers, with whom they have been known to associate with in mixed flocks. Photographed on an early morning in August 2016 at Boundary Bay Regional Park, British Columbia.

This young Rufous hummingbird was taking a break from scrapping with a fellow hummingbird for ownership of the flowers in a vast public garden to enjoy a little moment of peace and quiet in the sun. Photographed in early June 2017.

Stunning Rufous Hummingbird Perching on Plant Keychain

I was surprised to learn that Black-Headed Grosbeaks will fly to the ground to eat seed; my previous encounters with these strikingly-colored finches was strictly up (way up!) in the trees. This handsome fellow showed no restraints about catching some sun on the boardwalk, either, and unwittingly gave me several closeups of himself in the process. Stunning Black-Headed Grosbeak Songbird Keychain

The smallest and perhaps most strikingly colored falcon found in North America. In the avian kingdom, where females are often dressed in drab hues, the slate gray and barred, copper orange plumage of the female American Kestrel give her a dazzling beauty to rival that of her male counterpart.

I'd hardly call a Spotted Towhee a cute little bird. The red eyes on this large sparrow are mesmerizing and can best be described as eerie; and the black, white, reddish-brown plumage it wears all year round are "power colours". Photographed at Stanley Park's Lost Lagoon on a chilly afternoon in late November 2015.

This photo was selected by the Cornell Lab of Ornithology, to be featured in its "Backyard Birds and Blossoms" Coloring Book (release date Spring 2017).

WWN Spotted Towhee in the Autumn Leaf Litter

Add a touch of whimsy to the kitchen or dining room with this striking sandstone coaster. 

This pose is the cat's meow! This neighbourhood cat has been very neighbourly since summer 2014 ... visiting regularly for her dose of birdwatching, cuddles, and saucer of milk. Here she is, posing next to the camellia leaves on a wet and gloomy day.  "Sweetie" is one affectionate kitty ... she has been known to leap up onto complete strangers' laps for a nap!

The Whimsical Cat and the Camellia Coaster

I can't get enough of these well-dressed and beautiful soloists, who are all-year-round residents in Metro Vancouver. Until late May 2016, when I encountered a fledgling in the backyard, I was unaware that a few pairs of White-Crowned Sparrows were raising families nearby (and, as I had suspected, last year, too, in the cotoneaster bush out front!)
