Another gorgeous loner, a late migrant Whimbrel, wanders the autumn shores on an early sunny afternoon at the south side of the Tsawwassen Ferry Jetty in its (highly successful) search for crabs. This wading bird--normally gone by early fall in Metro Vancouver--has overstayed its welcome, to the delight of wildlife photographers, instead of heading to South America with its chums.  This one was hanging out with a similarly-sized sextet of Black Oystercatchers, and none were the least bit fazed by the appearance of photographers (or kiteboarders).

An adult Bald Eagle flies into the sunset at the Wireless 40 Station in Ladner, British Columbia. We saw 40-50 Bald Eagles (a conservative estimate) of various ages in this area in late December 2016--most were roosting high in the tops of trees scattered through this dog park.

If the legendary celestial phoenix had an earthly form, it would have to be this creature. Golden Pheasants are showstoppers, wherever you see them. In their natural environment, these shy creatures seek the underbrush in the day and roost high in trees at night. As with most birds in the avian kingdom, the males are the ones who dress to impress, and this uncharacteristically bold fellow is no exception. This is the red gold variant.

Seafood dining at its best! One of five Black Oystercatchers we spotted on a windy, cloudy day at the Tsawwassen Ferry Jetty over the Great Backyard Bird Count 2017 (Feb 17-20) weekend. The fishing (clamming?) was good ... these shorebirds were hauling in clam after clam after clam!

This photo was the 1st Place Winner in the Behavior Category of the Cornell Lab of Ornithology's 2017 Great Backyard Bird Count Photo Contest.

Brown Creepers are common all-year-round residents in Metro Vancouver, but it's easy to miss seeing these masters of disguise in the forest. This is the closest I have come to photographing this extremely well-camouflaged bird, and seeing the meal in its bill was a nice added bonus.

An adult Bald Eagle surveys its domain below from its lofty perch in the Boundary Bay Wildlife Management Area. Metro Vancouver is home to thousands of these birds of prey, and seeing 25-50 a day throughout most of the year is not unheard of.

An unexpectedly close encounter with a female Northern Harrier while walking the paths of the local wildlife area in early Spring 2017. This beautiful, owl-faced bird of prey, so often seen soaring the skies, was hunkered down in the marshes -- probably waiting out her next meal, a duck who had gone to ground.

This stunning male Yellow-Rumped Warbler (Audubon variety) was so busy engaged in the pursuit of tasty green worms in this red-leafed cherry tree that he was unaware of the photographer tracking his every move. Photographed in early May 2017 on an unseasonably warm and sunny spring day.

Fall migration brings thousands and thousands of Snow Geese to the shores of Metro Vancouver every year, and 2017 produced a bumper crop of these migratory birds -- a stunning spectacle to witness. Among the vibrant and calling sea of white that seemed to blanket the high tides from dawn to dusk, outnumbering the usually omnipresent and overwhelming numbers of gulls, crows, and wintering ducks at this time of the year, we also saw 5 rare blue morph Snow Geese. Photographed on a sunny afternoon in October 2017 at Boundary Bay Regional Park, British Columbia, Canada.

A Flock of Snow Geese at the Beach Mug

This was a Christmas Day filled with plenty of birds in the backyard -- including this rather introspective Black-Capped Chickadee looking skyward on the pear tree. Sunny skies and chilly temps made my puffed up and sleepy feathered friends reluctant to stir from their perches, and that led to a few opportunities for closeups of birds I normally find difficult to get stills of.

A Black-Capped Chickadee on the Pear Tree Keychain

Add a touch of nature and whimsy to the living room with this wildlife-themed lampshade! The Hooded Merganser hen in the middle looks far from impressed at the two drakes courting for her attention. She seems to be throwing the photographer the avian equivalent of a raised eyebrow ("you've got to be kidding me!") Photographed on a chilly and eventful winter birding day in early February 2015 at Boundary Bay Regional Park.

A Meeting of Hooded Mergansers Tripod Lamp

Easily recognizable from far away by their enormous bills, Northern Shovelers, although generally not skittish around humans, do keep themselves at a fair distance from spotting scopes and cameras, and frequent nearby bodies of water or sandbars. This fellow, on the other hand, was just inches from me, feeding just inches from the shore at the local wildlife habitat for quite a few moments before moving on.

Closeup of a Handsome Northern Shoveler Duck

Add a touch of nature to any room with this wildlife-themed wall hanging.  This male Downy Woodpecker announced himself quite vocally with a trademark chip-chip-chip repertoire just before making an appearance on this dead tree. He proceeded to peck away at his perch, oblivious of the solitary camera lens trained on him and the many walkers on the trail.
