Hanging with my peeps! Despite the 60-80 Sanderlings probing the shoreline, getting a group photo of this high-energy flock (which was soon joined by another flock of 30-40 Sanderlings) in action was a bit difficult (imagine kindergarten-aged children running amok all over the place); shots of bills submerged in water as well as feathered butts pointed in my direction were the norm.

Cute Sanderlings Sandpipers at Beach Postcard

Perched on a fallen log (and living up to his name) is this colourful drake, one of several Wood Duck “fixtures” at Piper Spit. Burnaby Lake is home to the largest concentrations of Wood Ducks–hands down, the most colourful waterfowl you’ll find in Metro Vancouver, Canada.

Slate-Colored Dark-Eyed Junco on the Pear Tree Postcard

With water beading off his inflatable crest, and a simultaneously striking and conservative palette of blacks, whites, and cinnamon brown, the adult male Hooded Merganser is one winter duck species that makes you stop and stare. They will swallow large fresh pond fish whole by stretching that normally hidden neck of theirs to a foot in length. This handsome, unperturbable gent was swimming in the ponds at the local wildlife sanctuary--not surprised to see so many humans moving in a like direction--in late December 2019.

Stunning Hooded Merganser Duck Swims By Postcard

Nothing draws the honeybees in mid/late May through June like the huge California Lilac that blooms with hundreds of bluish-purple clusters on the front lawn. In fact, this bush resembles a purple beehive in late spring/early summer when these tiny winged marvels congregate.

Honeybee Gathering Pollen From California Lilac Postcard

Easily recognizable even from a distance by virtue of their enormous bills, reddish-brown/blue/green plumage, and shiny green heads, Northern Shovelers, although generally not skittish around humans, do keep themselves at a fair distance from our cameras and spotting scopes, and frequent nearby bodies of water or sandbars. This fellow was minding his own business, uncharacteristically close to shore and not mingling with the members of his flock in the rushes.

Northern Shoveler Duck at the Pond Postcard

Strikingly colored winterberries have already ripened by late fall at the Boundary Bay Wildlife Management Area in Delta, British Columbia, Canada. One can't help but be dazzled by the scarlet masses of this deciduous holly tree, which keep their crimson hues all the way through winter (if they haven't already been eaten by birds).

Perhaps the friendliest, most well-behaved bordie collie I've ever had the pleasure of meeting. This gregarious girl introduced herself to us before her owner (retroactively) gave her permission to do so once again. While the humans talked, she neither barked--not even once!--nor chased the wildlife in the local habitat, but went quietly into a nearby field of wildflowers to mug for my lens. After she was sure that I had snapped to my heart's content, she returned to sit at our feet. Realizing that I hadn't reciprocated her greeting with some attention, though, she (rather comically) poked me with a forepaw a few times (in the same way that a 5-year-old child would tug on an adult's arm for attention) until I acquiesced with several well-deserved pats on her head, chuckling to myself that her "gestures" seemed so human! After sitting outside for an hour and a half as the afternoon snow fell quickly and in fat clumps this afternoon, this beautiful male Varied Thrush finally ventured to the bowl of the seed on the ground. Occasionally, he would look up and gaze in my direction before resuming his meal. After eating his fill (and keeping the other, smaller songbirds at bay), he returned to flipping leaf litter under the thicket. My first time photographing a Varied Thrush in the snow. Taken in early February 2017.

WWN Stunning Varied Thrush in the Driving Snow

Although their rattling call has become a familiar sound to my ears, it's not easy to get a photo of the Belted Kingfisher in repose. By the time I've heard this well-dressed fisher, it's usually in motion, diving from its perch on a powerline or tree limb into the waters below to snag some unwitting piece of sushi. This lady was an exception, sitting quietly on a branch in the evening sun for several minutes before flying off to her next meal. Most of the time, I tend to encounter the females, whom I consider to be the prettier of the time, with their reddish brown and blue necklaces. Photographed in late July 2016 at Colony Farm.

Last year, I was fortunate enough to encounter the female Yellow-Headed Blackbird at Manning Park. This year, I saw not one but three adult male Yellow-Headed Blackbirds (and at least one female)--the former calling attention to themselves with their golden heads and breasts, less-than-melodious birdcalls, and frequent sparring matches with the more familiar Red-Winged Blackbird males in the marshes of Iona Island.
