Our first (and only) attempt (so far) to grow these tart but tasty heirloom tomatoes. So named Green Zebra on account of its exotic and striking dark green stripes on its bright lime green flesh, a two-tone color palette that remains, even when ripe.

That the Surf Scoters of White Rock Pier are habituated to the presence of humans is a bit of an understatement. This handsome and tame drake was one of hundreds of these large black seaducks who routinely passed under the boardwalk during a crisp but sunny morning visit in early November 2019, giving great bird's eye views of that colorful and comically oversized schnoz that the ladies of his kind have found so fascinating for so long.

Stunning Surf Scoter Duck at Pier's Edge Postcard

Great Blue Herons are generally solitary creatures, and this immature was no exception. Its stunning solitude was magnified by the golden masses of withered reeds that surrounded it. Photographed in late December 2019 at the local wildlife sanctuary.

Great Blue Heron in a Field of Golden Reeds Postcard

There's lots to be admired when you're a Hooded Merganser. Crests are your specialty, whether you're the male or the female. The ladies have lovely cinnamon crests, and the gentlemen inflatable black-and-white numbers complemented by a one-size-fits-all black tux for all seasons with a swath of reddish brown on their sides.

Hooded Merganser Ducks at the Pond Postcard

A stunning statement of yellows and blacks, this handsome male Cape May Warbler has captivated crowds at Mill Lake Park in Abbotsford. This newcomer to southwestern British Columbia has been spending his winter break here since the first day of 2019 -- odd behavior for a boreal songbird who normally winters as far south as Mexico. However, he has adapted quite nicely, with tasty yellow mahonia petals and nectar, plus plenty of grubs and insects nearby!

Cape May Warbler Songbird with Flowering Mahonia Postcard

If you've been blessed with triplets, then this whimsical and heartwarming baby shower invitation postcard is for you! 

In a cute moment highly reminiscent of another bushtit family gathering from 2016, three young songbird fledglings roost together in the sun-dappled shade of the pear tree, while parents and helpers (older siblings) pick grubs from the leaves nearby, while keeping up a steady stream of conversation. My young subjects were only too willing to oblige for my lens. Photographed in late May 2020.

Cute Baby Bushtit Songbirds in Pear Tree Postcard

An unusual bird to see in Metro Vancouver during the fall migratory bird season, this Buff-Breasted Sandpiper was one of two I had the opportunity to photograph up close, and one of five spotted here in 2016. Like the Sanderling, the BBSA is exceedingly comfortable around humans. 

The BBSA is special for another reason: fewer than 80,000 individuals are estimated worldwide (per data from migration sites and its allaboutbirds.org/guide/Buff-breasted_Sandpiper/id profile; actual figures are difficult to obtain, as it does not always exhibit nest fidelity), making it a Near Threatened species. Its dainty, dove-like head, short bill, and buff coloration make it one of the easier peeps to identify. It is a transcontinental bird, flying northwards to breed in the arctic, and wintering in South America.

Rather comically, this one spent some time chasing the other one off. Apparently, it wanted the attention of the photographers all to itself! When it wasn't hogging the limelight, it made sure every lens was trained on it -- regardless of what it was doing -- foraging, resting on the grass, or grooming its feathers. Usually the Sooty Fox Sparrows I encounter in my backyard aren't the types to pop themselves up on a blackberry branch, woo my camera lens, and practically ask for attention and food, while sporting an attitude much bigger than themselves (and they are pretty big sparrows, too) ... but that's what this Lost Lagoon inhabitant was doing on a chilly late November 2015 afternoon at Stanley Park.

Closeup of a Canada Darner Dragonfly Tote Bag

Next to the Brown Hawker dragonfly who made a beeline for me last summer and decided that my denim-covered leg would make a nice warm perch for a few minutes, this extremely accommodating Canada Darner dragonfly has got to be one of my best insect subjects. S/he didn't twitch in the 30 minutes I spent photographing it, and as a matter of fact, stayed on the exterior of the house for at least another 15 minutes before flying off!

A most enchanting discovery in the California Lilac on the front lawn in mid-April 2017-- a young female Rufous Hummingbird, guarding "her" nectar feeder and gaining some protection from this large, cage-like bush. These migratory hummingbirds spend their spring and summer "vacation" in the Pacific Northwest, and, although smaller than the resident Anna's hummingbirds, are far feistier, often chasing the latter out of their territories for the duration of their five-month stay in the Northern Hemisphere.
