Fall migration brings thousands and thousands of Snow Geese to the shores of Metro Vancouver every year, and 2017 produced a bumper crop of these migratory birds -- a stunning spectacle to witness. Among the vibrant and calling sea of white that seemed to blanket the high tides from dawn to dusk, outnumbering the usually omnipresent and overwhelming numbers of gulls, crows, and wintering ducks at this time of the year, we also saw 5 rare blue morph Snow Geese. Photographed on a sunny afternoon in October 2017 at Boundary Bay Regional Park, British Columbia, Canada.

One of a dozen of Harlequin Ducks I had the fortune of meeting at the beach, and my closest encounter with these diving sea ducks. Interestingly, all were adult males in near or full breeding plumage and showing off their slate grey, white, and rich cinnamon feathers, but there were no ladies of their own kind to impress. Bring a bit of nature with you, wherever you go, with this wildlife-themed tote! 

The search for the male Mountain Bluebird at the North Jetty of Iona Island proved futile, but this blue bird -- perched on a twig near the chain link fence along Ferguson Road by the inner ponds -- didn't disappoint. 

The Tree Swallows have indeed returned to Iona Island, but we saw far fewer now than in March 2015 at this same point in time -- and the females had already shown up, too. I observed maybe 20 in flight and just a few perched like this fellow, and not a female in sight.

That the Surf Scoters of White Rock Pier are habituated to the presence of humans is a bit of an understatement. This handsome and tame drake was one of hundreds of these large black seaducks who routinely passed under the boardwalk during a crisp but sunny morning visit in early November 2019, giving great bird's eye views of that colorful and comically oversized schnoz that the ladies of his kind have found so fascinating for so long.

My closest encounter with a magnificent male Pileated Woodpecker, who was busy carving out a hole in a very tall tree. Rather than be spooked by the presence of a photographer nearby, this largest of North American woodpeckers would stop briefly to see who was rustling the dead leaves on the forest floor, and then resume his woodworking activities. Photographed on Galiano Island in the early evening of July 3, 2017.

WWN Beautiful Pileated Woodpecker on the Tree

Far easier to distinguish than the Tundra Swan and Trumpeter Swan by virtue of its facial knob and bright orange bill, a Mute Swan looks into my lens as it leisurely plies the waters of Lost Lagoon at Stanley Park.

Although their rattling call has become a familiar sound to my ears, it's not easy to get a photo of the Belted Kingfisher in repose. By the time I've heard this well-dressed fisher, it's usually in motion, diving from its perch on a powerline or tree limb into the waters below to snag some unwitting piece of sushi. This lady was an exception, sitting quietly on a branch in the evening sun for several minutes before flying off to her next meal. With her crest up, she looks like she's doing the bird equivalent of a human raising an eyebrow. Most of the time, I tend to encounter the females, whom I consider to be the prettier of the time, with their reddish brown and blue necklaces. Photographed in late July 2016 at Colony Farm.

Female Belted Kingfisher Out on a Limb Metal Ornament

The biggest eagle in North America is an extremely common sight in Metro Vancouver; I can see 100 or more in any given day. Their nests--also the largest of any bird in North America--are amazing to see, with or without any inhabitants in them; I have seen many built in tall trees and even some on the tops of transmission towers.

Profile of an Adult Bald Eagle Throw Pillow

Larkspur is one of my favorite garden flowers, but I had never before seen these tall flowers in this deliciously lovely shade of (royal) blue. These vividly colored delphiniums were photographed at a local public garden in the spring of 2015, and the gardener and master landscaper was more than happy to illuminate me with their backstory.
