With its wide open spaces, the Boundary Bay Wildlife Management Area is home to many different species of songbirds as well as several raptors. I found the brown-tinged feathers on this rather bold Black-Capped Chickadee--who was anticipating a free handout of seeds--rather interesting. Perhaps a hybrid with a Chestnut-Backed Chickadee was one of its parents (or grandparents)?

Some regard the robin as a harbinger of spring, but a freak all-day snowfall and almost double-digit sub-zero temperatures the following morning is what brought ten American Robins calling to the rapidly dwindling supply of pyracantha berries. Stunning American Robin in the Snow Large Christmas Stocking

This handsome fellow actually made a beeline to the wharf from which I was photographing a trio of Double-Crested Cormorants ... apparently all these avian "marina users" are quite comfortable around humans. Although they are the Queen's birds, Mute Swans are considered an invasive species in North America on account of their natural behaviours, which upset the native ecosystem, and efforts have been made to keep their numbers down. However, my subject, is just one of fewer than 300 wild Mute Swans who inhabit British Columbian waters.

An almost perfectly camouflaged female Great Horned Owl attempts to catch some shuteye in the neighbor's 100-foot Douglas Fir on a rainy fall day, only to be subjected to the verbal and physical harangues of nine Northwestern Crows. After three hours, they finally left her to her beauty sleep. Photographed on November 13, 2016.

An "urban" Rough-Legged Hawk perches precariously on the top of a spindly young tree in Tsawwassen, British Columbia, Canada. As I have seen this raptor several times near the local shopping mall, I can only assume that this is its territory--before and after development. A Black Turnstone wanders a wintry beach in Metro Vancouver.
