Trying its best to look adorable, this Eastern Grey Squirrel adopted a wishful pose for my camera in the hopes that I had food on my person. Some of my fellow humans succumbed to the collective charms of these non-natives, who were as thick as thieves at Stanley Park's Lost Lagoon on a chilly late November 2015 afternoon.

Sanderlings are tiny -- and surprisingly, quite approachable -- migratory shorebirds that can be found on Vancouver beaches in the winter months. This one was strolling quite leisurely on the shoreline in its "winter wear" (non-breeding plumage), completely at ease with the photographer. Taken on a very sunny and busy winter afternoon at Boundary Bay Regional Park in 2014.

If someone combined the adorably big head and black eyes of a Black-Capped Chickadee with the colours and bill of a Kookaburra in a Jay-sized body, they'd have the whimsically-named Whiskeyjack. Also known by its less colourful aliases of Canada Jay and Gray Jay, we saw no fewer than six of Canada's official national birds at Manning Park's Lightning Lake, where they would boldly descend on picnic tables in the hopes of free handouts.

An unexpectedly close encounter with a female Northern Harrier while walking the paths of the local wildlife area in early Spring 2017. This beautiful, owl-faced bird of prey, so often seen soaring the skies, was hunkered down in the marshes -- probably waiting out her next meal, a duck who had gone to ground.

This male Pekin Robin decided to satisfy his curiosity of the approaching humans, and flew into a large tropical tree to observe us from under the large leafy cover. Our initial encounter was all too brief and disappointing, but this second meeting yielded the opportunity to study this wonderfully dressed and beautiful singer in much greater detail and length. Our subject must have noticed this, as he was unusually still and not hopping from branch to branch!

An Indian subcontinent native, this Old World babbler is so popular that many other countries want to claim it for their own, and so, it goes by other aliases, including Pekin Robin, Pekin nightingale, Japanese hill robin, and Japanese nightingale.

The first time I have seen the reclusive Hermit Thrush perfectly posed on the pyracantha coccinea (Scarlet Firethorn) in the front yard. The warm yellow you see in the backyard is the leaves of the neighbor's weeping alder (just a few days after this photograph was taken, those leaves all fell off).

Part brainteaser, part assemble-it-yourself art, this challenging, wildlife-themed puzzle is great for improving muscle memory. 

First time in 3 years of trying that I've been able to photograph a Steller's Jay. The mesmerizingly bright blue feathers of this crested corvid grab attention wherever it goes, and it is even a master of mimicry, imitating cats, dogs, squirrels, and even man-made sounds. Subject enjoyed corn, birdseed, sunshine, and lots of attention! As for the other backyard regulars, they didn't seem to mind sharing the spotlight with this omnivore.
