Ruby-Crowned Kinglet Songbird on Hawthorn Bush Notebook

A White-Crowned Sparrow welcomes the day (and enchants its rapt listeners) with a simple but sweet song. As spring turns into summer, we see more and more of this beautiful songbird, who often forages solo, too. This one has just a hint of the yellow crown for which it is named, and even less of the black "V" between its eyes. By mid- to late- spring, many are sporting much thicker and blacker brows, and much brighter yellow crowns. These large, chubby sparrows have a beautiful, easily recognizable song that they sing from dawn to dusk in the trees and bushes (in my backyard, at least). They are more comfortable foraging on the grass, although we have "trained" them to eat from the hanging open style feeders.

If someone combined the adorably big head and black eyes of a Black-Capped Chickadee with the colours and bill of a Kookaburra in a Jay-sized body, they'd have the whimsically-named Whiskeyjack. Also known by its less colourful aliases of Canada Jay and Gray Jay, we saw no fewer than six at Manning Park's Lightning Lake, where they would boldly descend on picnic tables in the hopes of free handouts.

Those tiny blue flowers are so soothing to see, especially when they bloom in huge masses, which they are apt to do. With flaming red mascara to match his lipstick and magnificent crest, this handsome Crested Wood Partridge looks just as flamboyant as he sounds. Our first encounter with the Roul Roul proved to be elusive and disappointing. This latest visit, however, yielded multiple encounters with five of them, including two pairs, and a full-grown offspring. None of these diminutive pheasants showed the least bit of hesitance about stepping out--which made us very careful where we walked!

A presumed hobby farm escapee, this adult male Mandarin Duck has been seen in the company of the Wood Ducks of Piper Spit. He has called Burnaby Lake home since he was first spotted in 2018. His stunning pastiche of ruffs, dazzling color palette, and "fins" make him such a dreamboat to photograph. Mother Nature left nothing to the artist's imagination when she made this creature! One of an unexpectedly large flock of 30 Buffleheads, who were swimming in a local pond at Ambleside Park in early December 2016. These seaducks were uncharacteristically bold, and venturing as far to land as a few feet away from the water's edge. More than a handful--like this handsome adult male--looked like they were expectantly waiting handouts of birdseed from the watching birders and photographers, and yet, when none was forthcoming, resumed their activities of swimming, preening, or diving for food.

During my second visit to Surrey's Elgin Heritage Park, my wish to see a Golden-Crowned Kinglet again was granted with the appearance of one of several accomplished singers in a giant fir tree. A diminutive but high-energy and multi-tasking bundle of energy--being able to sing, and flit from branch to branch while hunting for insects--the Golden-Crowned Kinglet nevertheless proved to be a challenging subject to capture.

Although this handsome and talented singer--garbed in dazzling whites, crisp blacks, rich brown streaks, and a yellow/green cap--was quick to regale us with his cheery, energetic aria on many occasions, opportunities to photograph him on the local mountain flora were few and far between. His presence was a delight to local birders like myself, for this songbird is a very rare sight in the West; Chestnut-Sided Warblers are normally found in the Canadian Prairies and provinces eastward. My first-of-year-Mallard-mom-with-baby-on-her-back (one of eight) sighting at the local pond today. Both are sitting in a little grassy area just off the water. These ducklings couldn't be more than a few days old, and already they were swimming and floating like little corks under the watchful eye of Mother Mallard (who was anything but a Mother Hen).
