After meeting one of his "brothers" on Iona Island last weekend, I hardly expected to come face to face with another male Northern Harrier -- but there he was, flying over and seeking *us* out after having feasted handsomely a few minutes before.

A White-Crowned Sparrow welcomes the day (and enchants its rapt listeners) with a simple but sweet song. As spring turns into summer, we see more and more of this beautiful songbird, who often forages solo, too. This one has just a hint of the yellow crown for which it is named, and even less of the black "V" between its eyes. By mid- to late- spring, many are sporting much thicker and blacker brows, and much brighter yellow crowns. These large, chubby sparrows have a beautiful, easily recognizable song that they sing from dawn to dusk in the trees and bushes (in my backyard, at least). They are more comfortable foraging on the grass, although we have "trained" them to eat from the hanging open style feeders.

This male Eclectus Parrot has rockstar tendencies, and tends to be loud and given to overacting when he wants your attention ... making him a colourful personality with equally colourful "fowl" language.

"The Green Orator" Eclectus Parrot Hip Flask

One of my favourite birds to photograph, and one of the most elusive as well. This lovely male Varied Thrush was a bit stunned but none the worse for wear after flying into a window, but he chose to take five on the cherry tree -- giving me time to capture his beauty from the upper floor sunroom, some 15 feet away.

Beautiful Varied Thrush Songbird in the Tree Flask

Owls are such fascinating creatures. They are front page newsmakers, drawing the interest of birders, nature lovers, and just about everyone else who has a pulse. Snowy Owls are especially charismatic; the largest owls in North America only show up in Metro Vancouver every few years, and their appearance during our winters causes crowds of admirers and fans to form and flock.

Beautiful, Dreamy and Serene Snowy Owl Flask

Color him intrigued! This male Hooded Merganser (along with his very small flock of three ladies) seemed quite surprised to see humans so close to his winter stomping grounds at Boundary Bay Regional Park. As his personal photographer, I was so surprised to see Hooded Mergansers so close to the main walking trails. Photographed in mid-December 2016 during an unusually long and cold, cold snap.

Perched on a fallen log (and living up to his name) is this colourful drake, one of several Wood Duck “fixtures” at Piper Spit. Burnaby Lake is home to the largest concentrations of Wood Ducks–hands down, the most colourful waterfowl you’ll find in Metro Vancouver, Canada.

Beautiful Pensive Wood Duck in the Marsh Flask

With flaming red mascara to match his lipstick and magnificent crest, this handsome Crested Wood Partridge looks just as flamboyant as he sounds. Our first encounter with the Roul Roul proved to be elusive and disappointing. This latest visit, however, yielded multiple encounters with five of them, including two pairs, and a full-grown offspring. None of these diminutive pheasants showed the least bit of hesitance about stepping out--which made us very careful where we walked!

Diminutive Bufflehead ducks tend to be a challenge to photograph since they keep their distance, but there's always one in the flock who takes his patrol duty very seriously -- giving me a quick onceover as he swims by. This male Downy Woodpecker announced himself quite vocally with a trademark chip-chip-chip repertoire just before making an appearance on this dead tree. He proceeded to peck away at his perch, oblivious of the solitary camera lens trained on him and the many walkers on the trail.
