This is a closeup of flowering pineapple guava aka guavasteen (which resembles St. John's Wort) in the backyard. This is the self-pollinating variety, and one of the newest additions to our backyard garden. The birds have started taking notice, too. Being dark green on the avocado-shaped exterior and creamy yellow or white on the inside, though, the fruit isn't anywhere as exotic looking as the flowers.

The red eyes on this large sparrow are mesmerizing and can best be described as eerie; and the black, white, reddish-brown plumage it wears all year round are "power colours". Photographed at Stanley Park's Lost Lagoon on a chilly afternoon in late November 2015.

My closest encounter with a magnificent male Pileated Woodpecker, who was busy carving out a hole in a very tall tree. Rather than be spooked by the presence of a photographer nearby, this largest of North American woodpeckers would stop briefly to see who was rustling the dead leaves on the forest floor, and then resume his woodworking activities. A very curious Holstein Friesian pauses to look at us from the Alaksen Wildlife Area as the rest of its herd (obviously responding to a cattle call of some sort) lumbers on without a backward glance. Not exactly what I expected to see while birding the Reifel Migratory Bird Sanctuary in late May 2016, but Westham Island *is* full of farms!!

Holy Cow! It's a Holstein Friesian! Golf Head Cover

A curious female Bufflehead does a swim by one of the big ponds at the Reifel Migratory Bird Sanctuary to investigate why there is suddenly a big flock of other ducks. Although insects and fish are the staples of their diet, I have noticed that handfuls of birdseed will bring one or two (generally, one male and one female) to investigate and partake of the free food.

A Bufflehead Duck Swims By Magnet

With water beading off his inflatable crest, and a simultaneously striking and conservative palette of blacks, whites, and cinnamon brown, the adult male Hooded Merganser is one winter duck species that makes you stop and stare. They will swallow large fresh pond fish whole by stretching that normally hidden neck of theirs to a foot in length. This handsome, unperturbable gent was swimming in the ponds at the local wildlife sanctuary--not surprised to see so many humans moving in a like direction--in late December 2019.
