Easily recognizable even from a distance by virtue of their enormous bills, reddish-brown/blue/green plumage, and shiny green heads, Northern Shovelers, although generally not skittish around humans, do keep themselves at a fair distance from our cameras and spotting scopes, and frequent nearby bodies of water or sandbars. This fellow was minding his own business, uncharacteristically close to shore and not mingling with the members of his flock in the rushes.

They seem like brittle beauties, but these purple star-like flowers are surprisingly hardy, drought-resistance perennials, especially given their South African roots. Purple ice plants bloom throughout summer and make for colorful groundcover.

Our second year globe artichokes are no slouch when it comes to flaunting the "purple hair", either. Should you be one of those backyard gardeners who let their artichokes grow old and arthritic--instead of picking them at their juiciest, tastiest stage, this is the lovely result, and a consolation prize of sorts. The African Superb Starling is such a beautiful rainbow of colours. When it makes an entrance, it really makes an entrance; it's no shrinking violet. Rare, though, is the moment when it stays still long enough to get a photo of it, but got it I did, as it waited for its turn to bathe in the waterfall.

African Superb Starling Songbird Postcard

Our first (and only) attempt (so far) to grow these tart but tasty heirloom tomatoes. So named Green Zebra on account of its exotic and striking dark green stripes on its bright lime green flesh, a two-tone color palette that remains, even when ripe.

Tasty Green Zebra Heirloom Tomatoes on Vine Postcard

This is a closeup of flowering pineapple guava aka guavasteen (which resembles St. John's Wort) in the backyard. This is the self-pollinating variety, and one of the newest additions to our backyard garden. The birds have started taking notice, too. Being dark green on the avocado-shaped exterior and creamy yellow or white on the inside, though, the fruit isn't anywhere as exotic looking as the flowers.

Pineapple Guava / Guavasteen / Feijoa Flowers Postcard

This lovely profusion of small white flowers was found decorating the main "square" of the VanDusen Botanical Garden.  Bridal Wreath Spirea is relatively easy to care for, but can grow up to 10 feet tall and wide if not pruned.

Airbnb for the birds! We were quite tickled to see how this Bewick's Wren was making itself very much at home in a long-vacated wren nestbox. This is not unusual to see during spring or summer, but completely unexpected on the second day of winter. My subject was content to showcase a few poses for me while catching a few rays of the midday winter sun. Photographed on December 22, 2019, at the Reifel Migratory Bird Sanctuary on Westham Island in Ladner, BC.

Cute Airbnb Moment Bewick's Wren in Nestbox Ceramic Tile

It’s not every day that you see big blue fir cones in Vancouver. The abies koreana is an endangered fir found in the mountains of South Korea. This is one of (at least) two such trees planted on the grounds of the UBC Botanical Garden.

Part brainteaser, part assemble-it-yourself art, this challenging, wildlife-themed puzzle is great for improving muscle memory. 

7 Killdeer were frequenting the mudflats near the pumphouse at Boundary Bay Regional Park / Centennial Beach after the first snowfall to truly blanket the region and turn normally flowing watercourses into frozen lakes of ice and snow. In my admittedly short 2 years of birding, I have never encountered Killdeer at this time of the year (winter is a week away), let alone under the current weather conditions. Photographed in mid-December 2016 during an unseasonably prolonged cold snap.

This female Anna's hummingbird adds a bit of colour and personality to the backyard on a rainy day. She is quiet and stealthy--and can often materialize without making a sound. Contrast this behaviour with that of the male, who makes himself heard well before I see him. Photographed perching on the Scarlet Trumpet vine after furtively having several long sips from the new nectar feeder--which has also drawn the attention and interest of at least one Black-Capped Chickadee, too.

WWN Anna's Hummingbird on the Scarlet Trumpetvine

One of seven Black Oystercatchers we spotted on a chilly but sunny day at the Tsawwassen Ferry Jetty over the Great Backyard Bird Count 2018 (Feb 16-19) weekend. The clamming was good ... these shorebirds were hauling in clam after clam after clam! Photographed in South Delta, British Columbia, Canada, on the first day of the Great Backyard Bird Count 2018.
