Handsome here played a drum solo on the neighbor's chimney. It was quite the "riveting" performance -- but should come as no surprise, as Northern Flickers have natural showmanship tendencies. A juvenile Double-Crested Cormorant swims by and gives me a cursory once over at Ladner Harbour Park. One of three juveniles swimming in the marina (fairly close to the wharf), and one of five such individuals in the general area. The youngsters have much lighter plumage than the adults, but by the time the former have matured, they're also less likely to be so close to humans. Even from a distance, this species of cormorant is readily identifiable, thanks to its bright yellow face patch.

This is my second visit to Surrey's Elgin Heritage Park, and I really wished to see a Golden-Crowned Kinglet again, my first photos of it on a deciduous tree being nothing but blurs. My wish was granted with one of several accomplished singers in a giant fir tree, a high-energy, multi-tasking (being able to sing, and flit from branch to branch while hunting for insects) Golden-Crowned Kinglet, who nevertheless proved to be a challenging subject to capture.

Cute Kinglet Songbird Causes Stir in the Fir Jigsaw Puzzle

With its wide open spaces, the Boundary Bay Wildlife Management Area is home to many different species of songbirds as well as several raptors. I found the brown-tinged feathers on this rather bold Black-Capped Chickadee--who was anticipating a free handout of seeds--rather interesting. Perhaps a hybrid with a Chestnut-Backed Chickadee was one of its parents (or grandparents)?

Stunning American Robin in the Snow Large Christmas Stocking

This handsome fellow actually made a beeline to the wharf from which I was photographing a trio of Double-Crested Cormorants ... apparently all these avian "marina users" are quite comfortable around humans. Although they are the Queen's birds, Mute Swans are considered an invasive species in North America on account of their natural behaviours, which upset the native ecosystem, and efforts have been made to keep their numbers down. However, my subject, is just one of fewer than 300 wild Mute Swans who inhabit British Columbian waters.

An almost perfectly camouflaged female Great Horned Owl attempts to catch some shuteye in the neighbor's 100-foot Douglas Fir on a rainy fall day, only to be subjected to the verbal and physical harangues of nine Northwestern Crows.
