Only the second time I've seen a Mourning Dove, and much closer than my initial encounter with the species. This one was quite calmly sitting high up in a tree while its partner was roosting in a much lower tree across the walking trail. If the legendary celestial phoenix had an earthly form, it would have to be this creature. Golden Pheasants are showstoppers, wherever you see them. In their natural environment, these shy creatures seek the underbrush in the day and roost high in trees at night. As with most birds in the avian kingdom, the males are the ones who dress to impress, and this uncharacteristically bold fellow is no exception. This is the red gold variant.

I'd hardly call a Spotted Towhee a cute little bird. The red eyes on this large sparrow are mesmerizing and can best be described as eerie. However, this frontal shot of one eating seeds left by visitors captures its curiosity, chubbiness, and strikingly beautiful plumage. All-year-round residents in Metro Vancouver and the Pacific Northwest, Black-Capped Chickadees are some of the most "resourceful" birds we have in the backyard. Cute Black-Capped Chickadee in the Tree Classic Round Sticker

This male Tree Swallow appears to be quite taken with this particular nestbox ... that look says "mine, all mine." Photographed in late March 2016. 

These small bluebirds have shown up almost a month later than last year, and the initial flocks are much smaller, too. 

Also absent at this time are the greyer females, which at the same time last year were already here. Nevertheless, it's still a wonderful experience to see these little birds in action over the water and in the skies.

My first sighting of the adorably small Diamond Dove. I saw the pair earlier briefly before they dashed off into the bushes, and it was another agonizing 20 minutes before this solo act appeared. Like s/he knew I had to photograph it, it landed on this branch to give me a few poses.

I was privileged to see a Saker Falcon in the feathers a couple of years ago. This female was so well-mannered with the large (and often noisy) crowds in attendance, as a matter of fact, that her handler rarely needed to be present to tend to her feathered charge! Chosen for thousands of years as a popular falconry bird for its exceptional trainability, this large, pale Eurasian beauty is sadly--despite being endowed with great hunting prowess, power, and speed--an endangered hierofalcon species thanks to loss and destruction of its habitat.

Isn't she lovely? This female Rufous hummingbird poses calmly for my camera on the old plum tree in the backyard. With the very early arrival (and disappearance) of the males in March and April as they migrate to as far north as Alaska, we have had a veritable dearth of yardbirds. Her continued presence means that life will become much more "interesting" for the resident Anna's (particularly the males). Not coincidentally, we are also seeing more birds in the backyard now.
