Birding just a small clearing of forest in Minnekhada Regional Park in late May 2016 yielded two new bird species for my life list, including this Red-Breasted Sapsucker, who chose to fly to a dead tree as I was photographing some other birds. This handsome woodpecker did not call -- but its bright red head did all the talking for it. It was all I could do not to stop and stare.

It takes two to tango and three to tangle! One lady is bracketed by two gents in another photo that shows why Wood Ducks are called Wood Ducks.  This fallen log actually held five Wood Ducks a few moments before -- but all were in various stages of preening, not all were looking at the camera, and every duck was on a different visual plane. Photographed in the afternoon winter sun at Piper Spit / Burnaby Lake.

This Sanderling was strolling quite leisurely on the shoreline in its afternoon search for tasty tidbits. These tiny shorebirds are common sights in Metro Vancouver during the winter months, and quite relaxed around cameras. Photographed on a very sunny and busy winter afternoon at Tsawwassen's Centennial Beach.

With his bright white bib, this handsome domestic Mallard (of the Duclair designer "persuasion") was definitely the odd duck out at the local wildlife sanctuary. That didn't stop him from charming the photographers in his midst, and moving his way to the forefront of the feeding frenzy that included many, many wild Mallards.

Rufous Hummingbird Sitting in the California Lilac Mug

A most enchanting discovery in the California Lilac on the front lawn in mid-April 2017-- a young female Rufous Hummingbird, guarding "her" nectar feeder and gaining some protection from this large, cage-like bush. These migratory hummingbirds spend their spring and summer "vacation" in the Pacific Northwest, and, although smaller than the resident Anna's hummingbirds, are far feistier, often chasing the latter out of their territories for the duration of their five-month stay in the Northern Hemisphere.

A brief detour from birding led to a chance encounter with two furry new friends at Ladner Harbor Park: a couple of adorable and oh so well behaved Papillon dogs, a very old Belgian/French breed of parti-color toy spaniels so named for their elegant, butterfly-like ears. Trading Stares with a Barn Swallow Flask

Marigolds aren't just eye candy; they've been used for culinary (teas, salads) and medicinal (anti-inflammatory) purposes for hundreds of years in European cultures. These beautiful, aromatic and showy blooms bloom all summer long into fall and even until the first frost. They are a natural mosquito repellent, and may also keep flower munchers like deer from the pride and joy in your garden. A Medley of Red Yellow and Orange Marigolds Postcard

Keep notes, reminders, and more in this whimsical, wildlife-themed journal.  The first time I've been able to photograph a female Bushtit without the sun overexposing her. She was part of a small flock of three Bushtits that included at least one male -- making it a coed flock. She was a bit surprised to see a couple of humans in her midst -- but not startled enough to fly away.

This male Tree Swallow appears to be quite taken with this particular nestbox ... that look says "mine, all mine." Photographed in late March 2016. 

These small bluebirds have shown up almost a month later than last year, and the initial flocks are much smaller, too. 

Also absent at this time are the greyer females, which at the same time last year were already here. Nevertheless, it's still a wonderful experience to see these little birds in action over the water and in the skies.

One of an unexpectedly large flock of 30 Buffleheads, who were swimming in a local pond at Ambleside Park in early December 2016. These seaducks were uncharacteristically bold, and venturing as far to land as a few feet away from the water's edge. More than a handful--like this handsome adult male--looked like they were expectantly waiting handouts of birdseed from the watching birders and photographers, and yet, when none was forthcoming, resumed their activities of swimming, preening, or diving for food.
