A herd of harbour seals was basking in the summer sun as the ferry pulled out of the Tsawwassen Ferry Causeway. Most of these pinnipeds ignored the behemoth moving in their midst, but a few, like this curious individual, would lift its head to see what the commotion was all about before assuming its original position. Photographed over the 150th Canada Day long weekend in early July.

My second visit to the Maplewood Conservation Area in North Vancouver produced meetings with not two, but six blacktail deer in a clearing ... four fawns and two does who seemed completely at ease with the small group of photographers in their midst. The younger ones seemed almost as curious about the humans as we were about them! This fawn was extremely happy to be alive, bounding in a very Bambi-esque manner through the forest! As close as these Surf Scoters look, they're still some 20-25 feet away. This trio is part of a small flock of four that ply the waters of the Tsawwassen Ferry Causeway.

I missed seeing one of these tiny plovers in the summer, but my subject, in its non-breeding plumage, is no less beautiful for it! A rare sight for this time of the year (usually these dainty-looking shorebirds are already wintering along the coasts of the Southwestern U.S., Central America, and South America), this Semipalmated Plover was frequenting the shores of Boundary Bay at Centennial Beach during high tide, in (almost) mid-December, along with a flock of Dunlins and Sanderlings on a surprisingly sunny (and warm-for-almost-winter) day.

He's so fly when he smiles! If that isn't an eye-to-eye grin, I don't know what is! After eluding me in the backyard for a week, this male Scarlet Meadowhawk (one of two males who showed up today and briefly tussled) finally decided to come back to earth on top of one of the bamboo stakes. He didn't even mind me sticking the macro lens in his face for this closeup, which makes Little Red look like he's ready to order his favourite poison at the bar. :)

A Smiling Red Dragonfly Bumper Sticker

They're back! On a surprisingly cold and rainy morning, two flocks of Bushtits (10 in each) flew in for brunch on the flowering carrot, butterfly bush, and California Lilac bush. Some took baths on the wet leaves, and these five guys were huddled on the plum tree for warmth. It was tricky trying to get the catchlight in everyone's eyes (and all of them facing the camera (more or less))--but without a doubt, these little birds are naturally photogenic. Photographed in early July 2016 and featured on the Cornell Lab of Ornithology's allaboutbirds.org website.

Hanging with my peeps! Despite the 60-80 Sanderlings probing the shoreline, getting a group photo of this high-energy flock (which was soon joined by another flock of 30-40 Sanderlings) in action was a bit difficult (imagine kindergarten-aged children running amok all over the place); shots of bills submerged in water as well as feathered butts pointed in my direction were the norm.

An adult White-Crowned Sparrow cuts a dashing figure at Boundary Bay Regional Park in South Delta, British Columbia, Canada, on the first day of the Great Backyard Bird Count 2018.

Show off your love of nature with this wildlife-themed tile, which features my first encounter with a Tropical Kingbird at Boundary Bay Regional Park in beautiful Tsawwassen, British Columbia. An unusual visitor during Pacific Northwest autumn months, the Tropical Kingbird adds a cheery bit of color to the fall with its striking butter yellow belly. This dazzling creature was relaxing in the early afternoon sun while a host of wildlife photographers quietly captured it in all its glory. Moments later, this large tyrant flycatcher was swallowing a Blue Darner dragonfly that it had swiftly and successfully hunted! Photographed in late October 2023.

WWN Stunning Tropical Kingbird on Blackberry Branch

Part brainteaser, part assemble-it-yourself art, this challenging, wildlife-themed puzzle is great for improving muscle memory. Look! Up in the sky! It's a bird! It's a plane! Oh wait, it is a bird. Probably one of us, coming in for a landing.  I was surprised to see Snow Geese goosestepping at Iona Beach Regional Park. I am used to seeing thousands of these geese in flight, and, less often, an equally large number on farms in the fall, winter, and spring--usually from a great distance, which makes closeups impossible. Never have I seen them in the wild so close, almost patently ignoring the humans among them. As the sun slowly slipped to the horizon, wave after wave of Snow Geese would descend to the grounds, making me witness to many white and reddish faces, juveniles and adults, those infamous grin patches, and varying plumages of white and grey.
