Elegant Satin Flowers on Black Neck Tie

Add a little character to the office -- or office party -- with this whimsical, wildlife-themed tie.  The skeptical expression on this nuthatch's face seems to say, "Another photo? Really? Don't you have enough already?"  He probably doesn't believe that I don't camp out at the base of the old plum tree with camera and long lens in hand, waiting for him to make an appearance. There are at least three Red-Breasted Nuthatches (two males and one female) who visit the backyard regularly since our first encounter with them last year, and they have been getting progressively bolder and bolder (even more so than the Black-Capped Chickadees, whom this male will even boot off to get to the sunflower seeds).

A Skeptical Red-Breasted Nuthatch Neck Tie

Add a little character to the office -- or office party -- with this whimsical, wildlife-themed tie.  This was a Christmas Day filled with plenty of birds in the backyard -- including this rather introspective Black-Capped Chickadee looking skyward on the pear tree. Sunny skies and chilly temps made my puffed up and sleepy feathered friends reluctant to stir from their perches, and that led to a few opportunities for closeups of birds I normally find difficult to get stills of.

Part brainteaser, part assemble-it-yourself art, this challenging, wildlife-themed puzzle is great for improving muscle memory.

This is a closeup of flowering pineapple guava aka guavasteen (which resembles St. John's Wort) in the backyard. This is the self-pollinating variety, and one of the newest additions to our backyard garden. The birds have started taking notice, too. Being dark green on the avocado-shaped exterior and creamy yellow or white on the inside, though, the fruit isn't anywhere as exotic looking as the flowers.

A pair of Sandhill Cranes wades through the shallow waters of the local wildlife refuge on a cloudy mid-winter's day. These are the largest birds that can be seen in Metro Vancouver all year round, more often on the ground, but occasionally in the air, too. As wild (and large) as they are, the ones who frequent the Reifel Migratory Bird Sanctuary will consent to being handfed, and indeed, sometimes demand disbursement of birdseed this way!

WWN Great Sandhill Cranes Wading through the Marsh

Part brainteaser, part assemble-it-yourself art, this challenging, wildlife-themed puzzle is great for improving muscle memory. 

When Bushtits come calling, it's a sudden avalanche of cuteness in the backyard -- because these social songbirds often show up in flocks of 10-30, feed briefly (and co-operatively) on the suet or whatever else they fancy (calling to each other constantly as they do so), and leave as quickly as they came. Once in a while, though, they will stay for 15-30 minutes. I photographed this damp fellow--who was caught in the morning rain--taking a moment to pause on the laurel bush. Some of his fellow Bushtits were actually bathing on the laurel leaves, like hummingbirds do. Photographed in early July 2016.

Cute Wet Young Bushtit Songbird on the Laurel Jigsaw Puzzle

With their russet plumage, Cinnamon Teals are aptly named, but their beauty is often not easy to capture, as these birds make themselves scarce, even when they do put in an appearance. Rarely seen in Metro Vancouver in anything but the smallest of flocks, these small dabbling ducks are the largest of the three Teal species who frequent the Pacific Northwest in the spring and summer.
