Sometimes a mistake can be the path to a new technique. This Japanese Shaga, a small but ornate beardless iris also rather romantically known as the butterfly flower for its delicate, wing-like petals, was actually photographed outdoors under natural daylight after I forgot to reset shutter speed and aperture settings from the previous photo.

This Eurasian Wigeon drake flew in with three American Wigeon drakes, literally crashing the party when I was photographing the Hooded Mergansers. Plenty of surprise appearances today. Eurasian Wigeons are infrequent visitors to North America shores. This is my second encounter with the male of the former species.

This female Anna's hummingbird adds a bit of colour and personality to the backyard on a rainy day. She is quiet and stealthy--and can often materialize without making a sound. Contrast this behaviour with that of the male, who makes himself heard well before I see him. Photographed perching on the Scarlet Trumpet vine after furtively having several long sips from the new nectar feeder--which has also drawn the attention and interest of at least one Black-Capped Chickadee, too.

Perhaps the most cosmopolitan of swallows, Barn Swallows are easily identified in flight, thanks to those copper bellies and iridescent blue feathers. Harder is getting a still of these colourful and active aerialists, but once in a while, they oblige me!

An overcast day is best for capturing the scintillating pink balaclava of the Anna's hummingbird, but that doesn't mean the subject will be any closer! This is the adult male who was given the ouster/bill/boot by a visiting female Rufous hummingbird a few weeks ago. He has since returned, and she is now the visitor. He's sitting on the old plum tree and giving the photographer the eyeball.

Seafood dining at its best! One of five Black Oystercatchers we spotted on a windy, cloudy day at the Tsawwassen Ferry Jetty over the Great Backyard Bird Count 2017 (Feb 17-20) weekend. The fishing (clamming?) was good ... these shorebirds were hauling in clam after clam after clam!

Add a touch of nature to the bedroom or living room with this wildlife-themed throw! 

Rufous Hummingbirds have usually left Metro Vancouver for Mexico by mid August, so it was a delight to see and photograph this exceedingly feisty straggler in the backyard. This little scrapper has been (successfully, for the past two days) giving grief to the juvenile male Anna's hummingbird who has owned the backyard for most of the summer (as well as the other feathered friends who visit), vigorously defending every flower and feeder in sight. This hybrid fruit tree branch has become its favorite perch, and gave me quite a few photographic opportunities. Photographed on September 4, 2016.

Mid-autumn brings the return of Buffleheads to the George C. Reifel Migratory Bird Sanctuary. While one or two of these diminutive ducks will partake of the birdseed thrown in the water, the rest generally keep their distance from humans and the other duck species.

Male Bufflehead Duck in the Afternoon Sun Placemat

Diminutive Bufflehead ducks tend to be a challenge to photograph since they keep their distance, but there's always one in the flock who takes his patrol duty very seriously -- giving me a quick onceover as he swims by. There was just enough filtered sunlight on this inaugural spring afternoon to make the colors of his iridescent head visible.

While shooting the flowering radicchio (Italian chicory) in the backyard, this pollen-covered honeybee decided to photobomb my attempt at just the right moment! Both the bee and myself were well rewarded for that moment of serendipity; her with nectar, me with this shot.

After seeing that my water-beaded friend had not moved from her perch for 5 minutes, I knew I had to get a shot of her from the other side of the window.  This is the closest I've ever gotten to a Varied Thrush, male or female. They do like to show up on rainy days, which makes photography a challenge. :)
