Wildlife and the magic of the holiday season go hand in hand, and no bird wears winter better or is more strongly associated with the season of cold than the charismatic Snowy Owl. The largest owls in North America only show up in Metro Vancouver every few years, and their appearance during our winters causes crowds of admirers and fans to form and flock.

Third time (and third day!) was finally the charm with the reclusive Band-Tailed Pigeon, North America's largest pigeon. A small, paparazzi-shy, and unusually late-migrating flock of 8 of these purple forest pigeons has been in the neighborhood for 2 days, but this one finally consented to having its photo taken through a window on a fine spring morning as it perched on the shepherd's crook (after very quietly flying onto one of the 100-foot tall Douglas Firs in the backyard)! 2017 seems to be the year of Wilson's Warblers, and our backyard has not been exempt from the presence of these small but cheery yellow warblers. The energetic black-capped males have been exploring every potted plant and fruit tree and singing their uplifting melodies. This handsome guy paused on the cherry tree just long enough for me to get him in all his golden goodness. Photographed in mid-May 2017.

Japanese Andromeda aka Pieris Japonica is one of my favorite shrubs. It is one of the first plants to flower in the spring--making it an early and obvious choice for pollinators like bumblebees and honeybees--and its slow growing nature makes it an easy-to-maintain natural border plant. Its medley of young dark red leaves, mature yellowish green leaves, and white bell-shaped flowers contrasts nicely against a blue sky and makes for spectacular landscape shots.

The fly I just caught was THAT big! This handsome male Rufous Hummingbird was photographed at one of the nectar feeders at the Reifel Migratory Bird Sanctuary in mid-May 2016. These feisty little hummingbirds are a popular attraction in Metro Vancouver, and can be seen here patronizing nectar feeders from March through August, although warm spells late into the fall in 2015 saw a few overstaying their welcome until the end of October!

Bracketed by the underbrush was this Virginia Rail, who wandered into a sunlit patch at Brunswick Point, Ladner, British Columbia, and gave me this unexpected photo op. This was one of four Virginia Rails we saw today in the area--both pairs were within 200 yards of each other--and acting most unlike their usually highly secretive selves! I was privileged to see a Saker Falcon in the feathers a couple of years ago. This female was so well-mannered with the large (and often noisy) crowds in attendance, as a matter of fact, that her handler rarely needed to be present to tend to her feathered charge! Chosen for thousands of years as a popular falconry bird for its exceptional trainability, this large, pale Eurasian beauty is sadly--despite being endowed with great hunting prowess, power, and speed--an endangered hierofalcon species thanks to loss and destruction of its habitat.
