My first sighting of the adorably small Diamond Dove. I saw the pair earlier briefly before they dashed off into the bushes, and it was another agonizing 20 minutes before this solo act appeared. Like s/he knew I had to photograph it, it landed on this branch to give me a few poses.

The stereotypical definition of parrot, this gorgeous Blue and Gold Macaw certainly didn't mind being put in the spotlight for a few photos at the local zoo. Despite the Blue and Gold Macaw's famed talking abilities, s/he was atypically quiet, unlike her other cousin in attendance, the Green-Winged Macaw, who made sure one and all knew she was not to be ignored.

My second (and closest) encounter with the magnificent cheetah on a hot afternoon in September 2014 at the local zoo. This big cat was pacing restlessly around in his cage, but he did stop once, and our eyes locked through the chain link during this moment. There is something so visceral about making a connection with wildlife.

Trading Glances with a Magnificent Cheetah Classic Round Sticker

Looking deceptively like a baby duck, this full grown Bufflehead hen struck the perfect pose for me at one of the inner ponds at the George C. Reifel Migratory Bird Sanctuary. Curious "sentries" like this one will often detach themselves from the flock to satisfy their curiosity about those lenses pointed in their direction. I really doubt it's for the birdseed, unless we have discovered one with a sudden taste for them. :) 

There was just enough afternoon sunlight left to reflect the blue skies in the waters, paint a catchlight in this Bufflehead's eyes, and cast a soft glow on her face. 

With fall giving way to winter in just another week, we are seeing more and more of these tiny diving seaducks -- but always in small groups that tend to stay in waters far, far from human view. Though not skittish like Hooded Mergansers tend to be, I have yet to see a single Bufflehead set a webbed toe on land.

Sweet Bufflehead Duck on Sunlit Waters Classic Round Sticker

The smallest shorebirds (and sandpipers) to visit North American shores during the summer, Least Sandpipers can be seen feeding in small flocks on the mudflats of local wildlife areas. The yellowish green legs (when not covered in mud) of these sparrow-sized "peeps" make it easy to ID them and separate them from their similarly-sized cousins, the Western Sandpipers and Semipalmated Sandpipers, with whom they have been known to associate with in mixed flocks. I was surprised to learn that Black-Headed Grosbeaks will fly to the ground to eat seed; my previous encounters with these strikingly-colored finches was strictly up (way up!) in the trees. This handsome fellow showed no restraints about catching some sun on the boardwalk, either, and unwittingly gave me several closeups of himself in the process. That the Surf Scoters of White Rock Pier are habituated to the presence of humans is a bit of an understatement. This handsome and tame drake was one of hundreds of these large black seaducks who routinely passed under the boardwalk during a crisp but sunny morning visit in early November 2019, giving great bird's eye views of that colorful and comically oversized schnoz that the ladies of his kind have found so fascinating for so long.

Perched on an old dock piling for either a bit of sun or rest is this Double-Crested Cormorant, some 20 feet away. This represents my closest encounter with an adult of this prehistoric-looking, turquoise-eyed seabird.

A number of these large butterflies were flying through the Boundary Bay Wildlife Management Area during our early evening visit, but this one was "kind" enough to grant us an impromptu studio session for a few minutes while it fluttered and fed from the local flora.
