Add a little character to the office -- or office party -- with this whimsical, wildlife-themed tie. 

When Bushtits come calling, it's a sudden avalanche of cuteness in the backyard -- because these social songbirds often show up in flocks of 10-30, feed briefly (and co-operatively) on the suet or whatever else they fancy (calling to each other constantly as they do so), and leave as quickly as they came. Once in a while, though, they will stay for 15-30 minutes. I photographed this damp fellow--who was caught in the morning rain--taking a moment to pause on the laurel bush. Some of his fellow Bushtits were actually bathing on the laurel leaves, like hummingbirds do. Photographed in early July 2016.

Add a little character to the office -- or office party -- with this whimsical, wildlife-themed tie.  

This female Anna's hummingbird adds a bit of colour and personality to the backyard on a rainy day. She is quiet and stealthy--and can often materialize without making a sound. Contrast this behaviour with that of the male, who makes himself heard well before I see him. Photographed perching on the Scarlet Trumpet vine after furtively having several long sips from the new nectar feeder--which has also drawn the attention and interest of at least one Black-Capped Chickadee, too.

Add a little character to the office -- or office party -- with this whimsical, wildlife-themed tie.  The skeptical expression on this nuthatch's face seems to say, "Another photo? Really? Don't you have enough already?"  He probably doesn't believe that I don't camp out at the base of the old plum tree with camera and long lens in hand, waiting for him to make an appearance. There are at least three Red-Breasted Nuthatches (two males and one female) who visit the backyard regularly since our first encounter with them last year, and they have been getting progressively bolder and bolder (even more so than the Black-Capped Chickadees, whom this male will even boot off to get to the sunflower seeds).

A Skeptical Red-Breasted Nuthatch Neck Tie

A Short-Eared Owl surveys its hunting grounds for opportunistic Northern Harriers who would not hesitate to take advantage of the fruit of its hunting prowess. Sudden gusts of wind fluff this hunter's head feathers, revealing the short ear tufts for which this owl is named. Photographed on a late afternoon in late November 2017.

Add a little character to the office -- or office party -- with this whimsical, wildlife-themed tie.  This is my second visit to Surrey's Elgin Heritage Park, and I really wished to see a Golden-Crowned Kinglet again, my first photos of it on a deciduous tree being nothing but blurs. My wish was granted with one of several accomplished singers in a giant fir tree, a high-energy, multi-tasking (being able to sing, and flit from branch to branch while hunting for insects) Golden-Crowned Kinglet, who nevertheless proved to be a challenging subject to capture.

As with many yellow summer birds on my watch list, I have been pursuing this beautiful warbler and prolific singer for quite some time. Two years ago, I heard his trademark witchety-witchety-witchety birdsong and have since gotten few and frequently shaded glimpses of his rakish black mask and bright yellow breast through local shrubs and bushes. This is the closest I have come to photographing him out in the open.

If that isn't an eye-to-eye grin, I don't know what is! After eluding me in the backyard for a week, this male Scarlet Meadowhawk (one of two males who showed up today and briefly tussled) finally decided to come back to earth on top of one of the bamboo stakes. He didn't even mind me sticking the macro lens practically into his face for this closeup! Little Red obliged me by putting his wings perpendicular to his body (dragonflies usually perch with their wings pointed forward; by adopting the damselfly pose, he made it easier for me to get an unobstructed view of his face). Cardinal Meadowhawks are smaller dragonflies than Blue-Eyed Darners and Brown Hawkers, but what they lack in size, they (the males, at least) make up for with their striking solid red colour.

Show off your love of nature with this wildlife-themed tile, which features my first encounter with an American Avocet at Boundary Bay Regional Park in beautiful Tsawwassen, British Columbia. This elegant wading bird is rarely found in Canada's westernmost province, so to discover two adults spending a week there during the early stages of fall migration, enjoying the local amenities and completely at ease with the photographer in their midst, was a real treat. Keep notes, reminders, and more in this whimsical, wildlife-themed journal.  By far, Columbian Ground Squirrels are the most entertaining wildlife at Manning Park, and the first ones to greet us in the parking lot of Manning Park Resort. These Prairie Dogs of the West were positioned near their network of holes in the ground (or in rotted tree stumps) and often calling in an upright position like meerkats or groundhogs (when they weren't chasing each other around or kissing). We found plenty at Manning Park Resort and Lightning Lake (particularly near the picnic tables). Columbian Ground Squirrels spend the short summer bulking up on fat reserves for their hibernation period, which lasts for seven months!
