On a very memorable Boxing Day 2017, these diminutive Green-Winged Teals were waddling daintily on the frozen ice with many others of their kind on the marshes lining Burnaby Lake's Piper Spit--proving to be very co-operative with the photographers. The same could not be said for the more standoffish Buffleheads, who were many yards from sight.

The rounder the songbird, the cuter it is. This little puffball is ready for a chilly weekend of sub-zero temperatures in Metro Vancouver! An adult White-Crowned Sparrow cuts a dashing figure at Boundary Bay Regional Park in South Delta, British Columbia, Canada, on the first day of the Great Backyard Bird Count 2018.

That the Surf Scoters of White Rock Pier are habituated to the presence of humans is a bit of an understatement. This handsome and tame drake and hen pair was one of hundreds of these large black seaducks who routinely passed under the boardwalk during a crisp but sunny morning visit in early November 2019, giving great bird's eye views of that colorful and comically oversized schnoz that the ladies of his kind have found so fascinating for so long.

This adult male Hairy Woodpecker was noisily deconstructing trees at the North 40 Park Reserve and showing off his gravity-defying moves to a(n) (unseen) convocation of Bald Eagles as spectators. Photographed in South Delta, BC, Canada, on the last day of the 2018 Great Backyard Bird Count.

One of a dozen of Harlequin Ducks I had the fortune of meeting at the beach, and my closest encounter with these diving sea ducks. Interestingly, all were adult males in near or full breeding plumage and showing off their slate grey, white, and rich cinnamon feathers, but there were no ladies of their own kind to impress. Photographed on the first full day of spring 2017.

Beautiful Harlequin Duck on the Rock Trinket Tray

Those of you familiar with famous paintings will realize that this is a wildlife spoof of one which sold for quite the pretty penny in 2005. I couldn't resist the opportunity to photograph this out-of-water pair of Northern Pintails at the local wildlife habitat. They were so well behaved and photogenic, and their pose naturally mimicked the subjects of Grant Wood's American Gothic, that to not capture them this way would have been artistically negligent. :)

My introduction to the Satyr Comma / Anglewing. Apparently these little, bright orange butterflies are supposed to be skittish, but don't tell this beauty that ... it posed for several shots on a blade of marsh vegetation. Photographed on July 2, 2016 at Campbell Valley Regional Park.

The golfers on the fairway clearly didn't disturb this rabbit, who was busy munching away on the delicious and well-manicured greens. This one paused to mug for my camera, and then went right back to chewing on its verdant comestibles, unfazed by the attention.

An adorable flock of very young Canada Goose goslings--perhaps hatched just a few days ago--from the first crop of feathered babies at Burnaby Lake / Piper Spit forages on the grass on a sunny spring day. Despite the human traffic in the area, its parents were, surprisingly, very uncharacteristically relaxed and unprotective of their small brood. Photographed in late April 2017.

It's not a Pacific Northwest winter unless you see the Varied Thrush. One of my favorite backyard birds to see (and a highly elusive one at that), this songbird has a stunning beauty to match the hauntingly beautiful timbre of its song. This handsome fellow was foraging in the backyard with several other wintering birds when I photographed him from the second floor--giving me a rare bird's eye view of t him. We almost never see them during the summer when they spend that season northwards in Alaska, but the call of the colder seasons of the year brings them back to us. Photographed in mid-January 2017.

Stunning Varied Thrush Songbird in the Grass Mouse Pad

When you're this small and round, even watching you eat is a cute experience! Saw more of the tiny Sanderlings at the Boundary Bay Regional Park beach, just before Valentine's Day 2017. This one was foraging on the shoreline with 20 others of its kind, dining on the remnants of clams that had been already picked apart by gulls.

The ladies of the bird world may have the "disinterested" look perfected when it comes to males and their courtship antics, but once in a while, the girls will pull something really interesting out of the bag. Her pose caps off an eventful day where I saw a flock of Hooded Mergansers, Common Goldeneye, Bufflehead, American Coot, and an out-of-town Eurasian Wigeon at the local pond!
