With their oversized heads; small, plump bodies; and spunky personalities, Black-Capped Chickadees are a common sight throughout much of North America. Their fondness for black oil sunflower seeds is legendary, and their willingness to purloin seed from open hands is equally shameless. Having up to three of these songbirds perched on your hand at the same time, deciding which seed (or seeds) to make off with and feast upon, is hardly unusual, not to mention time well wasted.

Cute Chickadee Songbird under Blackberry Leaf Postcard

This is the third sighting we have had of a hermit Thrush, a lovely singer, in the yard in the past two years, but the only time we have spotted it on the front lawn -- this time, perfectly posed on the pyracantha coccinea (Scarlet Firethorn). The warm yellow you see in the backyard is the neighbor's weeping alder.

This chubby little number didn't seem the least bit fazed to be photographed. Taken from 20 feet away--this was my second attempt to photograph it in just a few minutes. So thrilled to see this bold little berry eater. Photographed on October 21, 2016.

Stunning Hermit Thrush Songbird on Pyracantha Postcard

The African Superb Starling is such a beautiful rainbow of colours. When it makes an entrance, it really makes an entrance; it's no shrinking violet. Rare, though, is the moment when it stays still long enough to get a photo of it, but got it I did, as it waited for its turn to bathe in the waterfall.

African Superb Starling Songbird Postcard

Marigolds aren't just eye candy; they've been used for culinary (teas, salads) and medicinal (anti-inflammatory) purposes for hundreds of years in European cultures. These beautiful, aromatic and showy blooms bloom all summer long into fall and even until the first frost. They are a natural mosquito repellent, and may also keep flower munchers like deer from the pride and joy in your garden. Photographed in mid June and mid July 2016 at local public and private gardens.

Sometimes a mistake can be the path to a new technique. This Crested Iris was actually photographed outdoors under natural daylight after I forgot to reset shutter speed and aperture settings from the previous photo--which turned out to be perfect for highlighting its delicate petals.

Great Blue Herons are generally solitary creatures, and this immature was no exception. Its stunning solitude was magnified by the golden masses of withered reeds that surrounded it. Photographed in late December 2019 at the local wildlife sanctuary.

You'd never guess, from her playful and youthful manner, that Stella is actually 10 to 12 years older than she looks! This indoor sweetie is as likely to cuddle up to the laps of strangers as she is to those of her regular pair of humans, but she knows how to puts her paw down as far as dogs (especially big dogs) are concerned.

This young Bald Eagle came to within 20 feet of me as it flew over my head during my walk through the Boundary Bay Regional Park, a sprawling wildlife habitat in Metro Vancouver, British Columbia, Canada, on an early spring day in 2017. We locked eyes briefly (neither really daunted by the presence of the other), and then it continued to wing its way to a copse of dead birch trees where several others of its kind were roosting.

An adorable flock of very young Canada Goose goslings--perhaps hatched just a few days ago--from the first crop of feathered babies at Burnaby Lake / Piper Spit forages on the grass on a sunny spring day. Despite the human traffic in the area, its parents were, surprisingly, very uncharacteristically relaxed and unprotective of their small brood. Photographed in late April 2017.

Seafood dining at its best! One of five Black Oystercatchers we spotted on a windy, cloudy day at the Tsawwassen Ferry Jetty over the Great Backyard Bird Count 2017 (Feb 17-20) weekend. The fishing (clamming?) was good ... these shorebirds were hauling in clam after clam after clam!
