A perfect start to an early winter morning: a male Red-Shafted Northern Flicker roots around in the (still frost-free) grasses of the front lawn for tasty grubs and worms. After 15 minutes of "grazing", North America's second-largest woodpecker was still there, so I decided to photograph him lounging in the grass. I knew I was going to only get one shot with my subject looking over his shoulder and flashing that bright red mustache once the front door squeaked open (if even that), so it was to my great surprise that I ended up with five shots, and this was the best of the bunch.

Fall and winter bring great numbers of Dark-Eyed Juncos to Metro Vancouver--and these colorful sparrows are second in number only to the diminutive Bushtits for the most commonly seen songbirds in our yard during these times of the year. This lovely female was quite aware that the camera was trained on her, and made an extra effort to give me her best pose.

My second visit to the Maplewood Conservation Area in North Vancouver produced meetings with not two, but six blacktail deer in a clearing ... four fawns and two does who seemed completely at ease with the small group of photographers in their midst. The younger ones seemed almost as curious about the humans as we were about them! This fawn was extremely happy to be alive, bounding in a very Bambi-esque manner through the forest! Isn't she lovely? This female Rufous hummingbird poses calmly for my camera on the old plum tree in the backyard. With the very early arrival (and disappearance) of the males in March and April as they migrate to as far north as Alaska, we have had a veritable dearth of yardbirds. Her continued presence means that life will become much more "interesting" for the resident Anna's (particularly the males). Not coincidentally, we are also seeing more birds in the backyard now.

Female Rufous Hummingbird on the Plum Tree Tote Bag

About 4 of the 10 Horned Grebes we spotted at Blackie Spit were swimming and diving uncharacteristically close to the main walking path of Crescent Beach -- close for Horned Grebes, that is (about 20-30 feet away). The fishing was obviously quite good near shore. My closest encounter with these birds. They are exhibiting neither the flamboyant yellow horns nor red-and-black breeding plumage during this season, but those red eyes and dapper tux are nonetheless mesmerizing!

This was a Christmas Day filled with plenty of birds in the backyard -- including this rather introspective Black-Capped Chickadee looking skyward on the pear tree. Sunny skies and chilly temps made my puffed up and sleepy feathered friends reluctant to stir from their perches, and that led to a few opportunities for closeups of birds I normally find difficult to get stills of.

Being small and drab-colored doesn't stop the diminutive Bushtit from drawing attention to itself with its twittering and high energy antics. This fellow caught my attention at Centennial Beach, after a (more or less) fruitless day of birding. Heard long before they are seen, these highly active songbirds often flock together in large groups, calling to each other often while they search for food.

WWN Stunning Wood Duck in the Pond

The start of the growing season means the return of the diminutive but feisty Rufous Hummingbirds to Metro Vancouver. From March through August, their presence means increased competition for nectar feeders and flowers for the resident Anna's hummingbirds. This fellow was one of five Rufouses to visit the Richmond Nature Park regularly on an early spring day. We witnessed extremely vocal and physical territorial disputes (which were, rather comically, inversely proportional to the size of the combatants). Photographed on April 4, 2016.
