A newly adult Canada Goose grooms itself at Piper Spit, Burnaby Lake, on a cloudy fall day, the angular and swan-like curve of its neck conveying an almost regal quality to this bird. Although migratory birds in many parts of the world, some Canada Geese are all-year-round residents in Metro Vancouver and the Pacific Northwest. Photographed in early November 2016.

After the time of many showy blooms had passed at the end of July, this lovely ornamental flower, a South African native also known as the River Lily or Crimson Flag, continues to awe and hold its own at the UBC Botanical Garden.

Kaffir Lily / River Lily / Hesperantha Coccinea Cards

This is the second hummingbird nest I've found. An Anna's hummingbird second-time mother (who had just raised two babies to adulthood a few days before successfully mating again) sits on her precious nest, lovingly and painstakingly made with lichen, moss, and spidersilk.

A most enchanting discovery in the California Lilac on the front lawn in mid-April 2017-- a young female Rufous Hummingbird, guarding "her" nectar feeder and gaining some protection from this large, cage-like bush. These migratory hummingbirds spend their spring and summer "vacation" in the Pacific Northwest, and, although smaller than the resident Anna's hummingbirds, are far feistier, often chasing the latter out of their territories for the duration of their five-month stay in the Northern Hemisphere.

Meditations on a squash! This Pacific Tree Frog was seeking a few moments of serenity on a ripening squash. My subject blended in with the green colors of its environment, eluding all but the most keen observers. When we had returned from a circuit of the gardens, s/he was still sitting there. Taken from about 30 feet away was the first Rufous hummingbird that I've managed to photograph in our backyard with any degree of clarity. Little White Booties herself was having a contemplative moment on the yet-to-bloom Scarlet Trumpetvine--much to the chagrin of the male Anna's hummingbird who previously owned the backyard. A Showstopping Ruddy Turnstone Serving Tray

This gorgeous loner, a late migrant Ruddy Turnstone, had no qualms about the myriad of lenses pointed his way on an early sunny afternoon at the south side of the Tsawwassen Ferry Jetty. From time to time, he would amaze us with his extraordinary feats of strength (this involved lifting clumps of kelp much bigger than himself, in his search for grubs and other tasty aquatic comestibles that shorebirds such as he would find irresistibly delectable -- great comic relief). Once in a while, he would pause to show us his best side (all of them). Clearly, he knew that the spotlight was on him, and he used it to his best advantage. My first encounter with this well-camouflaged shorebird, and another bird for my life list.

My second visit to the Maplewood Conservation Area in North Vancouver produced meetings with not two, but six blacktail deer in a clearing ... four fawns and two does who seemed completely at ease with the small group of photographers in their midst. The younger ones seemed almost as curious about the humans as we were about them! Photographed in late August 2016.
