Extremely tolerant of the long lens pointed at her from some six feet away, a female Rufous Hummingbird--a regular backyard visitor--sits on twining grape and kiwi vines in the cool of a mid-spring evening.

This handsome male Red-Winged Blackbird could not wait to show me his red-and-yellow epaulettes. Every few moments, he would sing and flip up his tail at the end of his song. This summer, I discovered that these birds will "consent" to be handfed at the local wildlife sanctuary. One went so far as to land on my hand and actively solicit me for food, keeping a grip on my fingers with his (very sharp) claws while he fed for 10 minutes!

Red-Winged Blackbird in the Marsh Photo Print

My closest encounter with a magnificent male Pileated Woodpecker, who was busy carving out a hole in a very tall tree. Rather than be spooked by the presence of a photographer nearby, this largest of North American woodpeckers would stop briefly to see who was rustling the dead leaves on the forest floor, and then resume his woodworking activities. Photographed on Galiano Island in the early evening of July 3, 2017.

Beautiful Pileated Woodpecker on the Tree Photo Print

Doing a flyby over the local ferry causeway at very close range on an early and blustery afternoon was this adult Ring-Billed Gull. I found this photo, which captures the downstroke, to be even more dramatic than the upstroke. The ideal bird-in-flight photo print for bird lovers.

A pair of Sandhill Cranes wades through the shallow waters of the local wildlife refuge on a cloudy mid-winter's day. These are the largest birds that can be seen in Metro Vancouver all year round, more often on the ground, but occasionally in the air, too. As wild (and large) as they are, the ones who frequent the Reifel Migratory Bird Sanctuary will consent to being handfed, and indeed, sometimes demand disbursement of birdseed this way!

A newly adult Canada Goose grooms itself at Piper Spit, Burnaby Lake, on a cloudy fall day, the angular and swan-like curve of its neck conveying an almost regal quality to this bird. Although migratory birds in many parts of the world, some Canada Geese are all-year-round residents in Metro Vancouver and the Pacific Northwest. Photographed in early November 2016.

In mid-August 2016, I met my first Wilson's Phalaropes. This was one of two juveniles, wandering the ponds at the George C. Reifel Migratory Bird Sanctuary in Ladner, British Columbia. Much smaller than Yellowlegs, these small but elegant shorebirds are typically seen at this time of the year, although never in large flocks. Breeding females are typically larger and more boldly colored than their male counterparts -- one of the few exceptions in the avian kingdom, where the males outshine the females in style and size.
