A curious and vocal Marsh Wren darts out of the marsh, long enough for me to snap his photo. Like most wrens found in Metro Vancouver, Marsh Wrens are songbirds that you tend to hear more of than you actually see. Photographed on the shores of the manmade Surrey Lake Park.

Beautiful Marsh Wren Songbird in the Marsh Keychain

I was surprised to learn that Black-Headed Grosbeaks will fly to the ground to eat seed; my previous encounters with these strikingly-colored finches was strictly up (way up!) in the trees. This handsome fellow showed no restraints about catching some sun on the boardwalk, either, and unwittingly gave me several closeups of himself in the process. Stunning Black-Headed Grosbeak Songbird Keychain

The only male Anna's hummingbird (of four males and one female regular) who would "consent" to having his (developing) crown taken at (somewhat) close range -- close, in this case, being 10-12 feet away in the second floor sunroom.  He constantly flashed me his pink head while he sat on the blackberry branch. Not even my opening a window "incentivized" him to fly off. Apparently this is fast becoming one of his favourite perches.

Anna's Hummingbird and His Raspberry-Dipped Head Keychain

Taken from about 30 feet away was the first Rufous hummingbird that I've managed to photograph in our backyard with any degree of clarity. Little White Booties herself was having a contemplative moment on the yet-to-bloom Scarlet Trumpetvine--much to the chagrin of the male Anna's hummingbird who previously owned the backyard. My second visit to the Maplewood Conservation Area in North Vancouver produced meetings with not two, but six blacktail deer in a clearing ... four fawns and two does who seemed completely at ease with the small group of photographers in their midst. The younger ones seemed almost as curious about the humans as we were about them! This fawn was extremely happy to be alive, bounding in a very Bambi-esque manner through the forest! Funny Young Blacktail Deer Smiles at Photographer Keychain

If the legendary celestial phoenix had an earthly form, it would have to be this creature. Golden Pheasants are showstoppers, wherever you see them. In their natural environment, these shy creatures seek the underbrush in the day and roost high in trees at night. As with most birds in the avian kingdom, the males are the ones who dress to impress, and this uncharacteristically bold fellow is no exception. This is the red gold variant.

Fall migration brings thousands and thousands of Snow Geese to the shores of Metro Vancouver every year, and 2017 produced a bumper crop of these migratory birds -- a stunning spectacle to witness. Among the vibrant and calling sea of white that seemed to blanket the high tides from dawn to dusk, outnumbering the usually omnipresent and overwhelming numbers of gulls, crows, and wintering ducks at this time of the year, we also saw 5 rare blue morph Snow Geese.
