Avian Royalty: Eastern Kingbird Classic Round Sticker

The fly I just caught was THAT big! This handsome male Rufous Hummingbird was photographed at one of the nectar feeders at the Reifel Migratory Bird Sanctuary in mid-May 2016. These feisty little hummingbirds are a popular attraction in Metro Vancouver, and can be seen here patronizing nectar feeders from March through August, although warm spells late into the fall in 2015 saw a few overstaying their welcome until the end of October!

Red Yellow Tomatoes and Green Tomatillos Rectangular Sticker

The first time I saw this small winged predator, it made its cameo in the backyard, to the dismay of the songbird regulars. Even though I (rather noisily) opened a window of the sunroom to get a shot of it, it made no move to move. Instead, it surveyed the grounds below it and the trees above, almost patiently, and methodically, before turning its bright yellow eyes on the photographer.

Usually the Northern Flickers I meet like to keep a rather "discreet" 50-foot distance between themselves and the photographer. For some inexplicable reason, this male Red-Shafted decided that he was best admired, not just high up in the tree, but on the ground as well ... some 6.5 feet away! Photographed on April 15, 2015.

In direct competition with the Cedar Waxwings and lesser-seen Bohemian Waxwings for fruit during the cold times of the season are the familiar American Robins. Perhaps, as a result of the Polar Vortex which has been holding Metro Vancouver in its icy thrall for the past month, I have never before seen so many of these large thrushes in the area during this winter. Another gorgeous loner, a late migrant Whimbrel, wanders the autumn shores on an early sunny afternoon at the south side of the Tsawwassen Ferry Jetty in its (highly successful) search for crabs. This wading bird--normally gone by early fall in Metro Vancouver--has overstayed its welcome, to the delight of wildlife photographers, instead of heading to South America with its chums.

Part brainteaser, part assemble-it-yourself art, this challenging, wildlife-themed puzzle is great for improving muscle memory. 

Two of an unexpectedly large flock of 30 Buffleheads, who were swimming in a local pond at Ambleside Park in early December 2016. These seaducks were uncharacteristically bold, and venturing as far to land as a few feet away from the water's edge. More than a handful looked like they were expectantly waiting handouts of birdseed from the watching birders and photographers, and yet, when none was forthcoming, resumed their activities of swimming, preening, or diving for food.

This Long-Eared Owl, unlike the others of its kind, was sleeping in the surprising warmth of a mid-winter sunset. Completely at ease with the trio of photographers enthralled by the wonder of its presence, this nocturnal hunter napped the afternoon away, rarely opening those golden eyes to stare briefly past our lenses, and perhaps, into the souls of its observers.

When Bushtits come calling, it's a sudden avalanche of cuteness in the backyard -- because these social songbirds often show up in flocks of 10-30, feed briefly (and co-operatively) on the suet or whatever else they fancy (calling to each other constantly as they do so), and leave as quickly as they came. Once in a while, though, they will stay for 15-30 minutes. I photographed this damp fellow--who was caught in the morning rain--taking a moment to pause on the laurel bush. Some of his fellow Bushtits were actually bathing on the laurel leaves, like hummingbirds do. Photographed in early July 2016.
