The early blooming pyracantha bush has proven to be very popular with a number of fall and winter birds, including this American Robin. Earlier this fall, I spotted six of these thrushes feasting away at the same time! 

My subject didn't need to share the pommes with another feathered friend, and didn't budge when I had the lens pointed her way from the front door. In fact, she continued to enjoy the bright red berries for a few moments more.

A drive down an old farm road on a warm mid-winter afternoon led me to this gorgeous adult Red-tailed Hawk perched on a power line. Said subject was unflappable and resolute in both the face of the long lens pointed in its direction and the constant flow of vehicular traffic.

Hanging with my peeps! Despite the 60-80 Sanderlings probing the shoreline, getting a group photo of this high-energy flock (which was soon joined by another flock of 30-40 Sanderlings) in action was a bit difficult (imagine kindergarten-aged children running amok all over the place); shots of bills submerged in water as well as feathered butts pointed in my direction were the norm.

This is the first time I've been to Stanley Park in the autumn. On this chilly day, the waters were swimming with so much waterfowl, including American Wigeons, Black Oystercatchers, Surf Scoters, Hooded Mergansers, Common Mergansers, Harlequin Ducks, Double-Crested Cormorants, the odd Pied-Billed Grebe, and hundreds of Barrow's Goldeneyes. What surprised me was how comfortable (and perhaps, even curious) some of these seabirds were with the various human users (bikers, hikers, dogwalkers), of the Stanley Park Seawall. This is the closest I've gotten to one particularly curious Barrow's Goldeneye.

Strikingly colored winterberries have already ripened by late fall at the Boundary Bay Wildlife Management Area in Delta, British Columbia, Canada. One can't help but be dazzled by the scarlet masses of this deciduous holly tree, which keep their crimson hues all the way through winter (if they haven't already been eaten by birds).

Birding just a small clearing of forest in Minnekhada Regional Park in late May 2016 yielded two new bird species for my life list, including this Red-Breasted Sapsucker, who chose to fly to a dead tree as I was photographing some other birds. This handsome woodpecker did not call -- but its bright red head did all the talking for it. It was all I could do not to stop and stare.

Meeting a Red-Breasted Sapsucker Notebook

The pink morph rock pigeon at Reifel may have eluded me, but this lovely, showstopping leucistic Rock Dove at Burnaby Lake/Piper Spit took my breath away. It did a fair amount of foraging and flying with an unusually large flock of its normally-pigmented fellows.

Perhaps, by virtue of the attention and food that was being lavished on the account of its pure white plumage, this specimen seemed to be inordinately aware of its distinctiveness -- and "greeted" me before I had even reached the boardwalk of the spit. It followed various other photographers around, too. Quite entertaining to watch!
