American Robins are bold, year round residents in Metro Vancouver, and have a reputation for putting up with humans -- even if the latter are not carrying something tasty on their persons! This fellow had success in rounding up a lunchtime worm or two in Surrey's Green Timbers Park on a cold day in February 2015.

My second visit to the Maplewood Conservation Area in North Vancouver produced meetings with not two, but six blacktail deer in a clearing ... four fawns and two does who seemed completely at ease with the small group of photographers in their midst. The younger ones seemed almost as curious about the humans as we were about them! This fawn was extremely happy to be alive, bounding in a very Bambi-esque manner through the forest! The second time I've seen Dunlins since first spotting a small flock huddled together in their breeding plumage (with their trademark black belly patches), on a cold spring day on the Iona Jetty spit in 2010. Three were part of a larger group of 10-12, who were fraternizing with a larger flock of Sanderlings (60) and a single out-of-season Semipalmated Plover (not pictured here).

Photographing honeybees on our huge blooming California Lilac is such a wonderful challenge, and it's our small attempt to ensure future generations of these tireless little workers. We are able to enjoy the fruits of their labours in the fruits and vegetables we harvest in the summer and fall, and the colorful flowers that flourish, sometimes late into the year, in our climatically mild part of the world.

Beautiful Honeybee on the California Lilac Post-it Notes

Celebrate nature with these sticky notes, which feature a winged wonder posed perfectly on the goldenrod in the spring time.

A number of these large butterflies were flying through the Boundary Bay Wildlife Management Area during our early evening visit, but this one was "kind" enough to grant us an impromptu studio session for a few minutes while it fluttered and fed from the local flora.

Beautiful Anise Swallowtail Butterfly in the Sun Post-it Notes

Celebrate nature with these sticky notes, which feature a solitary shorebird at the beach.

It's hard not to be amazed by such beauty! I am so used to seeing Dunlins in flocks of hundreds and thousands in their non-breeding/winter plumage, that to encounter a solitary member of the species is a bit puzzling. S/he was in full breeding regalia, and in no particular hurry to fly north for the summer.

Beautiful Dunlin Shorebird Sandpiper Goes Solo Post-it Notes

Celebrate nature with these sticky notes, which feature a woodpecker getting its dose of Vitamin D on a late winter's day.

Handsome here played a drum solo on the neighbor's chimney. It was quite the "riveting" performance -- but should come as no surprise, as Northern Flickers have natural showmanship tendencies. It was unusual to see the male near the fruit trees, as it is often the female who visits the suet block on the other side of the fence. Photographed on March 1, 2018.

My attempt to photograph a Rufous hummingbird feeding from the hot pink fuschia flowers on a sunny evening in late June 2016 ultimately proved to be fruitless ... but this Western Tiger Swallowtail butterfly who came to pose in its stead was a wonderful consolation prize!

Another gorgeous loner, a late migrant Whimbrel, wanders the autumn shores on an early sunny afternoon at the south side of the Tsawwassen Ferry Jetty in its (highly successful) search for crabs. This wading bird--normally gone by early fall in Metro Vancouver--has overstayed its welcome, to the delight of wildlife photographers, instead of heading to South America with its chums.

Funny Young Blacktail Deer Smiles at Photographer Button

Keep notes, reminders, and more in this whimsical, wildlife-themed journal.  The golfers on the fairway clearly didn't disturb this Eastern Cottontail Rabbit, who was busy munching away on the delicious and well-manicured greens. This one paused to mug for my camera, and then went right back to chewing on its verdant comestibles, unfazed by the attention.

The first time I have seen the reclusive Hermit Thrush perfectly posed on the pyracantha coccinea (Scarlet Firethorn) in the front yard. The warm yellow you see in the backyard is the leaves of the neighbor's weeping alder (just a few days after this photograph was taken, those leaves all fell off).
