I've only met the Blue-Winged Teals this year ... this is the third encounter and each one has brought me progressively closer to these summering migrants! Like Gadwall drakes, Blue-Winged Teal drakes dress conservatively for their women. No flashy feathers are necessary -- just lots and lots of personality!

I was privileged to see a Saker Falcon in the feathers a couple of years ago. This female was so well-mannered with the large (and often noisy) crowds in attendance, as a matter of fact, that her handler rarely needed to be present to tend to her feathered charge! Chosen for thousands of years as a popular falconry bird for its exceptional trainability, this large, pale Eurasian beauty is sadly--despite being endowed with great hunting prowess, power, and speed--an endangered hierofalcon species thanks to loss and destruction of its habitat.

This Eurasian Wigeon drake flew in with three American Wigeon drakes, literally crashing the party when I was photographing the Hooded Mergansers. Plenty of surprise appearances today. Eurasian Wigeons are infrequent visitors to North America shores. This is my second encounter with the male of the former species.

This male Pekin Robin decided to satisfy his curiosity of the approaching humans, and flew into a large tropical tree to observe us from under the large leafy cover. Our initial encounter was all too brief and disappointing, but this second meeting yielded the opportunity to study this wonderfully dressed and beautiful singer in much greater detail and length. Our subject must have noticed this, as he was unusually still and not hopping from branch to branch!

An Indian subcontinent native, this Old World babbler is so popular that many other countries want to claim it for their own, and so, it goes by other aliases, including Pekin Robin, Pekin nightingale, Japanese hill robin, and Japanese nightingale.

Usually the Northern Flickers I meet like to keep a rather "discreet" 50-foot distance between themselves and the photographer. For some inexplicable reason, this male Red-Shafted decided to forage on the ground ... some 6.5 feet away!

A mid-summer walk around Stanley Park's Lost Lagoon yielded the surprise of a raccoon. In fact, this one quietly preceded us, like a tour guide, for a hundred yards, to the cement bridge before joining a haze of other raccoons. S/he even stopped to give me a few angles ... all of which is very unnatural behaviour for a mammal who is more likely to be active at night!

With their russet plumage, Cinnamon Teals are aptly named, but their beauty is often not easy to capture, as these birds make themselves scarce, even when they do put in an appearance. Rarely seen in Metro Vancouver in anything but the smallest of flocks, these small dabbling ducks are the largest of the three Teal species who frequent the Pacific Northwest in the spring and summer. A rather interesting top-down view of a Great Blue Heron at the local wildlife refuge. I've been spotted by my subject, but this efficient (and, at times, ruthless) fisher is in no hurry to move from its spot. Great Blue Herons are the most commonly seen herons in Metro Vancouver, and may be even spotted in ditches along highways and freeways.

The start of the growing season means the return of the diminutive but feisty Rufous Hummingbirds to Metro Vancouver. From March through August, their presence means increased competition for nectar feeders and flowers for the resident Anna's hummingbirds. This fellow was one of five Rufouses to visit the Richmond Nature Park regularly on an early spring day. We witnessed extremely vocal and physical territorial disputes (which were, rather comically, inversely proportional to the size of the combatants). Photographed on April 4, 2016.
