An early morning walk in July 2015 brings us unexpectedly face to face with the normally distant and hard to photograph Killdeer. This is the father-to-be; his mate was guarding her precious clutch of eggs in a scrape under the watchful eyes of a Bald Eagle, also nesting, not 100 feet away!

I couldn't find an angle I liked with this two-tone Triandrus Daffodil until I did a few macro shots of it, and the seeming randomness of the streaks of red running rampant through this bright yellow flower seemed to me like a chaotically natural expression of art.

WWN Colors of the Changing Seasons

Part brainteaser, part assemble-it-yourself art, this challenging, wildlife-themed puzzle is great for improving muscle memory. 

Up to 20 of these diminutive but fearless sandpipers were braving choppy waters and 14-foot morning high tides on a sunny and unseasonably warm New Year's Day 2020, to pluck the anchovies that the pounding surf was constantly washing up on the shore just off the White Rock Pier. With their dark eyes, round heads, dainty bills, and plump bodies, Black Turnstones are fascinating creatures to watch.

Stunning Black Turnstone Shorebird on the Rock Jigsaw Puzzle

This handsome male Red-Winged Blackbird could not wait to show me his red-and-yellow epaulettes. Every few moments, he would sing and flip up his tail at the end of his song. This summer, I discovered that these birds will "consent" to be handfed at the local wildlife sanctuary. One went so far as to land on my hand and actively solicit me for food, keeping a grip on my fingers with his (very sharp) claws while he fed for 10 minutes!
