Around 1938, a newspaper columnist named Westbrook Pegler was the first writer to refer to liberals as “bleeding hearts," accusing them of tugging at voters' heart strings to gain their sympathy and their votes. Eventually, liberals embraced the term. "Beating heart liberal" borrows it, with respect.
