The female northern cardinal may not be as bright red as her male counterpart, but the green pines and snow sure highlight her gorgeous, more subtle red feathers. From the pop of red on her tan crest, to the tips of her wings and tail, her "membership" in the cardinal club could not be more clear than it is here. Add in the bright orange beak perfect for the safflower and sunflower seeds she will enjoy on this cold winter's day, and that plump chest rounded out with her additional winter plumage, and she could not be more cute. No wonder the colorful northern cardinal is the state bird of Ohio!

A beautiful butterfly has the ability to capture the imagination as they flutter from flower to flower in search of nectar. It is a special treat when they pause long enough for us to truly study them, and maybe even get lucky and snap a photo! 

The white peacock butterfly is native to the southeastern United States, Central America, and South America.

This cute squirrel discovered the birdseed I had set out for ground-feeding birds like cardinals and doves! I just couldn't help myself--he was too darn cute, and I didn't have the heart to chase him away. 

So today, I just set out extra for the four-legged friends who like to raid the feeders, and the makeshift feeding areas, I have scattered around my yard!

Butterflies and other pollinators love Joe Pye weed! This Tiger Swallowtail butterfly spent quite a bit of time in my backyard last summer, and on this day, I was able to capture him as he moved from bloom to bloom gathering nectar from the plant.
