The Château d'Angers is a castle in the city of Angers in the Loire Valley, in the département of Maine-et-Loire, in France. Founded in the 9th century by the Counts of Anjou, was expanded to its current size in the 13th century. It is located on a rocky ridge overhanging the river Maine. Now open to the public, Château d'Angers is home of the Apocalypse Tapestry. This photo features a beautiful and picturesque view from the fortress over the river Maine and the lake Lac du Maine.

As with so many of Renoir's canvases from the impressionist period, the handling of paint is bold and experimental, with thinly painted passages interrupted by jarring splotches of impasto.
